Hi all - I have a 2016 X and had my 12V battery go in fairly dramatic fashion a few weeks ago. Travelling south up the first hill on Transmission Gully, complete vehicle shutdown in a live lane. And snow to boot. Short story - keep a check on your 12V battery.

All up and going again with a replacement but having some trouble with getting any of the charging or climatic timers to set. I'm translating the error message from Japanese but it is along the lines of 'not set correctly, try again'. Oddly the dash clock when I first start up the car is 1 hour ahead of the touchscreen, but re-syncs itself after 20-30 seconds. I suspect the error is something to do with the initial clock setting, but I don't know how to adjust the clock in this model (except disconnecting the battery and reconnecting at midnight).

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks, but unfortunately I have the 2016 with the newer version of headunit that he mentions in the video. I can access the service menu, but there aren't any clock settings there. The GPS is disconnected.

The person I brought it from from GVI did mention there was a trick, but I wasn't shown the trick.

As an update from me, I purchased a 40kWh Leaf three weeks ago and it has been fantastic. Got all the specs I wanted (mainly colour and Bose) bar one which is that it has the foot hand brake, which is fine, it is just taking time to get use to it. It has extra specs I was not expecting like BBS wheels and leather sport seats. Also, it is in absolute mint condition.

Awesome, those are great looking wheels.

In the whole 4 years+ that we had ours, I never found out what that trick was. Best of luck.

it's very easy!

i need to find the video on google, yes it involves getting into the service menu and setting the time by trial and error (and some basic addition/subtraction math until it charges on cue)

Can you post a picture of your headunit? The one batman posted matches our 2016 leaf G spec and the X & G are typically the same.

Yep, this is a picture of the service menu. None of the options seem to have anything to do with clock settings:

These are the version numbers etc. if they mean anything to anyone:

And yes it does need a good wipe down!

Do you know anyone with a dongle and leafspy you can get to look at the errors?

Try and see if there is a local EV community on facebook, otherwise look at the NZEV group and post your question there.

My 12V battery seems to need replacing. It's still the one that came with the car from Japan when we got it at the start of 2020 (so of unknown total age). Label is Hitachi 70B24L. For those who have replaced their 12V battery, what did you opt for? I see that both driveev and bluecars have a replacement battery on their website, but shipping is not cheap -- I'm wondering if the battery is anything special or if can I just rock into the local repco / supercheap and expect to find something suitable.

I got AA to replace my 2016 Leaf earlier this year with something generic, nothing special needed.

No, you don't need a special 12v battery. Any NS60L battery should work (double check the terminal type & polarity).

Personally, I would be trying to source a flooded battery, rather than the much more common Calcium AGM batteries (maintenance free). (to match with OEM and the Hitachi 70B24L). Reason for this is that there are reports of people having 12v battery issues due to the relatively low charge voltages the leaf uses. My leaf is 2014, and the factory fitted flooded battery is still going strong.

As a bit of a tangent:

When you put 70B24L into Century's conversion table, it spits out this battery.

https://www.centurybatteries.co.nz/resources/battery-finder/product/battery/n55mf/info

It's an enhanced flooded battery (maintenance free), marketed towards cars with stop start systems.
