The 12V battery in our 2012 LEAF was replaced during its delivery to us in 2014 as it had failed in transit from Japan. The replacement was one of these NS60ALPP (but from unknown supplier) and is still going without issue.

I've read a few of the recent pages of this post... Didn't see anything about any apps that will connect to the leaf.

Searching the web I see some USA and EU available apps.. I think our leaf must be a jap import but hoping to still have some way of remotely seeing the battery charge status etc...

Any pointers? 2018 model.

Your best hope is someone figuring out how to get OVMS fully working on newer Leaf models (ZE1), I've been following the progress, but it currently requires a lot of work.

Thanks guys for the 12V battery pointers. For now I've charged the battery externally and it has got rid of the error messages. Next time I go into town I'll pick up one of those century n55mf batteries.

On the topic of external monitoring apps etc, I have an OVMS installed. It's pretty neat, but you definitely need to be a bit tech savvy I would say (although probably fine for most GZ readers). It's a fairly generic module that supports a whole bunch of cars to somewhat varying degrees. On my Jap import 2014 leaf it is great for monitoring battery state of charge, setting custom SOC thresholds (instead of the factory 80/100%), GPS location, etc. Some of the functionality (in particular lock/unlock doors) doesn't work with my model, and probably needs someone with CAN bus expertise and time to work out why.

Didn't mean any particular endorsement of the n55mf battery. When you put the Nissan leaf model into the century website, it recommends the cheaper and more common NS60LSMF / NS60LSMFHP.

The reason I found it interesting that the table spat out that one out, as it key marketing is being suitable for stop-start cars (which the leaf is not).

It is both heavy (17kg), expensive ($246 superstart, $587 at repco), and short warranty (24 months) battery, compared to the neutron 46B24L/NS60L batteries that both drive EV and blue-cars are selling for the leaf ($159 / $169, 12.8kg, 36mo warranty).

You would want to verify fit if you are going this route. Not saying it is a bad choice either. Enhanced flooded batteries can charge faster, which would be desirable in the leaf with a relatively short "charging" period, before the DC-DC drops the voltage to a lower maintaining level (for energy efficiency).

@RogerMellie:

LEAF owners in Auckland, where do you get your LEAF serviced and WOFed? Any recommendations besides GVI ?

Has anybody heard of Ultimate EV in Manukau at 154 Cavendish Drive. They seem to be very new.

I'm not sure on the details but Hamilton electric vehicles are seemingly working with Nissan to provide battery replacements.

https://www.facebook.com/996380190546882/posts/pfbid02xahR5tuyWpPNG7bc7koKr2soPipwHxwavkhsJ49mmtP3LayCqDMCSmdjWmJzsDhil/

Someone on one of the leaf groups said he's had a chat to them and they'll do a 40kWh for $12-14k which seems cheap compared to EVs enhanced offering. No idea if they'd sick a new 40kwh in an old model though as I doubt Nissan would agree to that upgrade.

I'm interested in this but as we don't do Facebook we can't access the link you've posted. Who is the company in Hamilton (i.e. their business name) so I can follow up on this?

The company is called "Hamilton electric vehicles" but here's the full statement from the Facebook post:

When skydivers join together to make formations in the sky, their hands, linked together, form a bond of trust.

We at Hamilton Electric Vehicles believe it is the same with the investment customers make in a new EV.

This includes our entire supply chain.

Today we are proud to announce a full battery replacement program with factory trained Nissan experts in this field in Japan.

This will increase the value we offer as an EV investment, as well as leading edge technology not currently available in New Zealand to existing EV owners.

Along with our new workshop, compliance centre and full workshop facilities, 14 hoists and new Service Manager, Paul Teesdale we will keep you updated on developments as they start to roll out in early 2023.

It's not completely clear what is on offer here as a follow up comment from them says they are factory cells that are fitted by an aftermarket factory (non Nissan). So it sounds like Nissan cells in a non Nissan pack.

Sounds to me like they are describing batteries from the Official Nissan battery exchange program. A 3rd party company was rebuilding Leaf batteries with the blessing of Nissan Inc.

“Starting in May 2018, owners of the 100% electric Nissan LEAF can turn in their used batteries and, for a fee, receive refabricated ones. Nissan is using the battery-refabrication capabilities of 4R Energy Corp., a company established through a joint venture with Sumitomo Corp., to offer the program.”

If it gets 62kw packs into the country for non-E+ models then great. But I'm guessing it will be a like for like deal?

This also presents motivation for EVsEnhanced to get their replacement blade system on the market, and will put pricing pressure on them.

Expecting mine to land around early Dec. Super excited. Got my ChargeNet fobs already, now I just need to sort out home charging options.

do you know much about 40kwh Leafs

- batteries lifespan better than 24-30kwh?

- more reliable than 24-30kwh?

- does the X model have collision avoidance?

- is the X more efficient that G?

- after buying from Japan, how much SOH do you expect to drop when it "settles down"

how much did you pay for importing yourself?
