A friend pointed me at this "Head to Head" video on YouTube from Motor Trends.

It compares several cars....by drag racing them: a Bentley SUV, a Tesla Model X SUV and an Alpha Romeo supercar among them.

The race between the model X and the Alpha is hilarious......and the outcome very impressive....

Why do all these "comparisons" only involve a drag race...yawwwwwn. Whooppity do, so you can accelerate, omg like I can get to 50km in like half a second, I'm so bad ass [/LA valley girl accent]

At least head to head did in fact compare a model s (or p) with a camaro/challenger out on the road.

I know, right? I'm no speed demon. If i had a Tesla Model Whatever with Ludicrous mode I'd probably crash it into a lamp post in minutes.

The acceleration in my Nissan LEAF with ECO off is more than jumpy enough for me! I usually drive in B-mode with ECO on just to limit the output/torque and keep it feeling more like a 'normal' car.....having instant access to all the power is potentially dangerous on city streets.

I might be in the market to install a semi-public EV charger at my place of work. Semi public in that it would be available to use for our customers etc. but not really the general public.

Don't think I could get the cost of a rapid charger past the bean counters - so does anyone have any brand/model recommendations for a Type 2 charger? Or a Type 1/2 combo unit? It will be fully outdoors.

I've literally only started a little research today - so excuse my ignorance :)

Check out Juicepoint. Best to contact them for your specific case.

The Delta EV chargers are also popular.

Both the Juicepoint and the Delta can be located outdoors if necessary.

The included cable is a J1772 (type 1) for the LEAF and compatible.

HOWEVER! -> Ideally at this point you'd wan't a charger that was just a Type 2 "Mennekes" socket...and the car brings its own cable with whatever plug the car requires. The Type 2 is the new NZ standard....and will be compatible with European cars in particular.

Juicepoint can offer a Type 2 option...and maybe Delta can, too. You'd have to ask.

To future-proof yourself, it would best to have just the Type 2 socket...and then any car can come along with it's own cable with whatever connector it needs. Otherwise you risk people pulling up to charge...and you only have J1772....and they can't charge.

All that aside, the MOST BASIC option is a 16amp Blue Commando socket...

Great thanks for the answer. Do all EV's have their own cable? Even the older leaf's etc? Or would it be up to the owners to buy a cable to keep in the boot if they come across a menneke charger?

My UK leaf was supplied from Nz dealer with cable for plugging into caravan plug with Nz domestic adapter.

The car also came with the original cable to plug into Mennekes type 2 sockets which are common in uk/europe.

Not sure the situation with Japanese leafs though as not sure how common Mennekes type 2 connections are in Japan.

As you said at the start, the point of it all is not how fast 0-100, and there is a cost it it all.
As you said, it is from point of the environment.
I have to respect your conviction by putting your money where your mouth is.
After pulling out the calculator and putting some numbers it, it is not as cheap it says.

I do 100km a day, and at that rate, I doubt the Leaf batteries can handle a year of that kind of charge/discharge rate.
So I have to factor that in as well.

However, I would love to have one, and hook up to my wind generator and Solar.
Please keep the info coming, absolute interesting and definitely will be into it when we are at EV version 3.0

As per Linuxluver, while it is not legally required, you are best to follow the government guidance on this matter.

DC chargers typically run at $50,000 or so each (plus wiring/install), so very hard to justify for the semi-public use you describe.

AC charging without a billing system typically comes at $1,000 - $1,500 per space (Plus install / wiring), making it a much more appropriate solution for your application.

Ideally get one or two of these (or equivalent):

These are $1300 each, and if fed with 3 phase 32A current (shouldn't be difficult to provision in a commercial environment), can charge every EV on the market as fast as it can handle (excl rare 43kW AC capable renault Zoe).

This is the new government recommendation for public charging. If EV owners want to use public charging in the future, they will need the appropriate cable.

The government only published it's recommendation late last year. Most EV charger installed prior to this were the USA style, tethered type 1 chargers. This is due to that in the early days, the Nissan leaf was the main EV on the market (along with the Holden Volt, and later the Outlander PHEV). All these cars had type 1 plugs.

Times have changed, and cars with type 2 (three phase capable) plugs have became more prevalent. Example include, Tesla's, Ex UK BMW i3's, All Renault Zoe's, Renault Kangoo, Ex UK VW e-golf, Mercedes B-Class Electric Drive. The hotly anticipated Hyundai ioniq will also use this plug type, along with at least 3 additional models expected this year.

The great thing about the untethered station is cars of both types can plug in using their own cable. Also means the station owner does not need to maintain the cable, and the installation will be tidier when not in use.

It will depend on the car and where it was sourced. A LEAF from Japan won't have such a cable unless the owner has purchased one. A LEAF from the UK will have such a cable (provided the buyer asked for it and the importer didn't assume the buyer "didn't need it"). I had to ask for mine.....

Other cars will all be able to AC charge, so they will need a cable with Type2 at one end whatever their car needs at the other.

I would think it would last more than a year.

The recommendation for longer battery life is to use it as much as possible between 20 and 80% capacity, and to not use fast DC charging too often.

If you are doing 100km a day, in a newer Leaf, that is about 60% of your battery so you could easily do the 80-20 thing, but if you are slow-charging at home overnight, you won't stress the batteries too much, and won't run them flat during the day either.

Buy EV and enjoy it while the battery is still running.. It is a great toy to play with as long as you can change your batteries..

I suspect absolutely you're correct.....today. Five years from now? Things will change. I'm aiming for 2021, but wanted to get started today. The battery should last that long. Fingers crossed. Either way, the $29,995 I paid for my LEAF is good value considering it costs me less than $2 / day to run it (as far as fuel is concerned) and it is zero emissions....which is something that is important to me with respect to climate change.

Can you tell me please what the cost of a brand new Nissan Leaf is in NZ? I was talking recently to a Honda dealer and they said that there is a Honda Jazz (available in Japan) that has the option of running on batteries but apparently NZ is not importing these at the moment. Can anyone tell me please whether these vehicles would be a good option if a second-hand one became available here?

However, the Honda salesman asked my why on earth I would want to buy an electric vehicle because he thinks that the extra cost of such a vehicle would more than offset any petrol savings that you could make over say a 3 to 5 year period. And of course the range isn't much more than 170km and you have to spend at least 30 minutes to charge the battery up, that is, if you can find a charging station. What happens if there is a queue of vehicles wanting to charge up?

Despite all this, I would prefer to buy a new electric vehicle, but most new car dealers try and talk you out of it! How many years will it be before EVs are a practical option?!!

I suspect that most new car dealers not sell electric cars so why would they talk you into buying it?
At the moment EV are really new tech for NZ so not well understood/trusted by most of the public (eg running out of power and getting stranded)
