It's almost universal now - you can't do it if there's a red right-arrow.

A large number of Kiwis see the lights as follows...

Amber... Accelerate as hard as possible.

Red... means stop only if you really feel like it.

Green... start of the drag race and accelerate has hard as possible.

In general I agree with you but we need to address the woeful compliance with current rules first. Another annoying habit is muppets who enter an intersection before their exit is clear. I have lost count how many times I get tooted and abused for obeying that rule.

There was a car accident on SH1 just after Porirua on the way to Wellington. Heavy weekend traffic coming back to the city. At one point it was one lane only with a couple of police cars and ambulance. Plus the construction work for the Transmission Gully, which won't be completed until 2020. Then, just after the accident some muppet hogging the right lane... And another muppet decides to do this in front of me (note that due to the lens the car appears to be further than it was - the old "objects in the mirror are closer than they appear" effect):

I noticed that you use a Navman MiVue system, Which model? and most importantly what is it like for low light/night?

My partner is a night time shuttle driver and hairy stories told of the Muppets on the road at night between Tauranga-Auckland airport would make even a seasoned copper blanch. Anyway so a good night capture ability is the thing especially of number plates. WiFi/Bluetooth a bonus.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Bzzt, we had tried it, and failed miserably.

This was at the corner of Akoranga Drive and Northcote Rd, Auckland. Quite some years ago.

Unable to comprehend, "stop, look right, and then proceed if clear ....."

Possibly due to a number of reasons:

1) Not turning left into the left most lane, and instead, swinging out to the rightmost lane.

2) Drivers on Northcote Rd - 2 lanes each way, swapping lanes near the traffic lights without indicating.

3) Treating it as a give way

NSW Australia has it:

The black writing on a white background says:

LEFT TURN ON RED PERMITTED AFTER STOPPING

This sign allows you to turn left on a red light after stopping. When turning left you must give way to all traffic approaching from the right.

Left turn on red light is only permitted at intersections where the sign has been placed.

After living over there for 30 years I do miss this little bit of road sensibility especially in the quiet cities & towns etc of NZ after hours.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

What is it with people and driving here?

The sooner compulsory professional driver training is a requirement of taking a test, the better.

I think that lack of compliance is largely driven by frustration at the excessively cautious nature of the current controls at every intersection. Not being able to turn right just because of the red arrow when you have a clear view of oncoming vehicles for example - it's utterly ridiculous. Also, people are becoming very disconnected from driving by having every single opportunity to think for themselves taken away, so they often simply stop thinking as a response.

Do you seriously believe the rules here are More strict than they are in other places with lower road tolls?

Even more useful would be having to get retested every time you renew your licence rather than just paying money for the "right" to drive. That way people would have less excuse for not knowing the current rules.

I had 1 hour of reflexes, theory etc including the simulator at Burwood 6 months after my stroke,

Had to pass that before they gave me 1 hour of practical with an Examiner and Occupational Therapist in the car the following week.

Then a wait for a 7 page report declaring me "safe to drive".

I hadn't been behind the wheel for 6 months before the exam!

This was after 30 years with my licence.

I passed!

So yes, I feel a right to be annoyed with the behaviour I see on our roads daily!
