To be fair, companies such as Apple are needed to progress these type of products. They may not invent the product and reinventing the wheel, but they copy existing products in such a way to bring out the good things, and remove the bad things. If it wasn't for Apple, we wouldn't have the smart phone like it is today, because everyone wants to copy them. I think Tesla is similar.

I agree. The Steve Jobs input would be great. But, unlike smartphones, EV is huge. Its a cost saver for consumers and a planet saver for 7 billion of us in the making. Maybe my words will be dissed, come back here win 50 years time

Forget the self drive thing. The big deal is emissions, green energy. This planet is suffocating.

Mercury is by far the closest planet to the sun. Yet Venus, our neighbour, and the brightest light in our sky is the hottest planet, due to greenhouse gases.

The days of Android vs iPhone fanboyism were fun, from both sides. In todays issues of climate change, progress, if you feel that about EV, thats a bit sad. Maybe we should petition for coal fired power generation as well?

I would really like to have seen the greens really push environmental issues this election, escpaily with this sort of thing. Unfortunately to me, they seem to be a more left wing Labour with the social polices, and the environmental stuff seems to be now in the background. We do really need to be pushing electric cars more, especially in our cities, as it is the future. But the incentives really are not there. It is a bit like diesel cars, which are apparently better for the environment than petrol, with less emissions etc, but government polcies actually made diesel cars more expensive to run with all the road user taxes etc, unless you were doing big distances. People in Wellington should be somewhat ashamed too (which includes me), as the electric Trolley buses are being phased out, which are all electric. Apparently they were gong to be switched to Hybrids, but that has been delayed, so they are being replaced with diesel for who knows how long.

I do wonder how much lobbying has to do with NZ government policies here, and getting such policies through parliment. It is not as bad as local government though whether the tail appears to wag the dog

Yep, and its sad. Here is the list of priorities

1. get Votes

2. Get on the news

3. Kiss babies

4. Get on the news

5.Give back via tax cuts, or anything else that gets votes, see Labour saying they will fix the gorge pronto

6. Do whats right for NZ, kiwis and the Earth

At times I want to fire all of the Govt, and take applications from 30 somethings, qualified, and passionate. AKA, get data, assess, make correct decisions based on data and assessment. Which ironically is what individuals and companies already do.

That isn't even close to the truth - over a lifetime an electric car will be a LOT more green than an ICE car. The ICE car will contribute between 7x and 10x the amount of CO2 in total.

And a Prius? That IS an ICE car. In many ways a Prius is worse than a standard ICE car because it has added complexity and you can the same economy out of a smaller and lighter car which would take less resources to manufacture.

The National Party is run by truckers and farmers.....and they hate any public enterprise and will generally wreck them. It's why I never vote for them. They serve the interests of a handful of vested interests with deep pockets and strong ties....and everyone else is more or less left on their own.

Greens have been focused on public transport. That is, ultimately, the right way to go. Cars take a vast amount of space compared to anything else. Plus you need to park them at home and at any destination you go to. That said, cars are a reailty of life in NZ now and for the foreseeable future.....so at least make them cleaner. Even better, make the buses and trucks cleaner, too.

Diesel emissions are actually very bad for everyone's health. Rich in cancer-causing materials and others that inflame lung tissue. We aren't allowed to locate schools or child care centres within 150m of a motorway because of diesel exhaust. It may produce less CO2 but it kills far more people via the other poisons it produces.

I dont get hybrids, unless they were for slowly graduating to EV. The ICE also has to carry the weight of the batteries and EV engine, the EV has to lug around the ICE

I was wondering if you could provide a reference for the 150 metre requirement due to diesel emissions?. Separation guidances seem to be acoustic, visual, and vibration, but I've no knowledge of road planning rules. The issue of particulate emissions ( PM10, PM2.5 ) from diesels are a concern, and currently specified vehicle emissions control systems don't solve them. Much of public transport and freight use diesel engines due to load size, and EVs will require new battery technology to replace the role of large diesel vehicles. The quicker solution is smaller locally-autonomous EVs with rapid change and/or charge batteries for public transport, rather than large buses or diesel trains.

Hybrids were primarily developed to meet California's % of new vehicle sales clean air regulations. The Prius in particular. At the same time, these and similar vehicles have provided a useful pilot for electric power trains and prepared manufacturers for an electric future.

The fact these vehicles undoubtedly contribute to a CO2 reduction is a happy byproduct. Especially so that many are used commercially as high km vehicles. The current Prius is 4.4l/100km.

Toyota is currently betting the farm on a new battery chemistry for future production. The Tesla III is expected to sell in California at close to the price of a Prius due to emissions incentives.

These are currently aimed at short range urban delivery requirements (<200km).
