With 200km range ev it would not add much total time compared with a petrol car. I would just stop and recharge when these breaks are decreed by those in back.

Rural south island can still be challenging just because there can be significant distances between settlements. In my Nelson to Hanmer example you would have to do so many charges because the distance between little towns is just a bit too far to chance it.

The Leaf make sense to me because it's compact little electric car that's perfect for urban driving. You can coax it along on longer trips if you have the time and inclination. The Ironic is a big car with small battery. Seems the worst of both worlds and I just don't get it.

IN April / May I did Nelson to Christchurch via Greymouth. THe biggest delay was the segment between Nelson and Greymouth. We stayed overnight in Murchison and then drove from Murchison to Christchurch the next day.

Picton to Chrischurch via 65 and 7 is 478km. The new LEAF would need 3 additional charges (150km / charge) of about 40 minutes each (assuming it leaves Picton on 90%-100%) to make the whole distance.

Sounds about right.

If you get the chance, try a BMW i3. The one-pedal driving in them is for real. You take your foot off the accelerator and the car WILL come to a complete stop....and regenning right the very last. :-)

First time it did it I was in the middle of Dickens St in Napier, wondering why the car had stopped. :-)

The Leaf is an excellent commuter and town car, as others have said. EVs are now viable for this application and used imports are viable financially (partly due to the subsidies in the economies we buy them from).

It's still some years off for most drivers if they regularly have to to do longer range trips. Expecting most long range trips to take 25% says that it isn't yet viable for most people. It'll get there fairly quickly but it's not there yet for the mainstream.

Personally I expect our next second car to be an EV. I think we're still 5-10 years away from both our cars to be EVs. This lines up with the expectations in being set in overseas markets like the UK and China.

Yes, that's pretty much how I see it too.

I recently phoned around and tried to find out whether Nissan is going to sell the 2018 Leaf as a NZ-New vehicle and for what price. Nobody could answer these questions or even give a likely date as to when the 2018 Leaf will be for sale in NZ.

Has anyone managed to get "official" answers from Nissan to these questions?

It's not just the number, it's the spacing. If they are clustered in the existing towns, that helps with any congestion but doesn't change the number of stops.

The charging outlet planned for Engineers Camp in 2018, means you still have to stop in Murchison, but you can drive past Springs Junction and stop at Engineers Camp (132km) and wait in the car while it charges. That town is exactly what it says on the box. A road-works depot with a camp. Also a nice view of Mons Millia.

If you were going through Hanmer (e.g. to stop for lunch and a swim) you would probably still stop somewhere before ChCh (185km). If you were going direct to ChCh (155km) maybe not.

Just to update this issue, I have just seen on Facebook this information about the expected pricing of a new Leaf in NZ:

"Can confirm pricing now in NZD for new Generation 3 ex Japan. It will be $55,000 for a brand new Nissan Leaf S, $57,000 for a brand new X, and $65,000 for a brand new G. That's shipped and delivered to your door.

We haven't allowed to gain the Japanese subsidy on them at this stage. If we can that will reduce the price."

But I haven't seen anything from an official Nissan dealer as yet.

Thanks for your post. Yes, when I put a figure of $55k to a Nissan rep, he said that it's likely that a new Nissan 2018 Leaf would cost all of $55k! So, the expectation is that the price, if sold new by Nissan in NZ, will be in the $60k - $65k range.

I find this rather disappointing, but it's just the reality of the new EV market in NZ at present.

Incidentally, when do you think the new 2018 Nissan Leaf may be able to be purchased in NZ?

Ooooh, would love to try an i3. Have driven Tesla Model S and X, and the Leaf for quite a while (rental for a month in Norway). Have been eying the i3 as a rental, but not sure about it.

Not having a stereo, to me is actually a feature. As I can then choose any stereo that I like. If it breaks or needs upgrading - different playback technologies etc. I can easily do it. Rather than being stuck with a stereo that I can't replace as it is deeply integrated to the heater controls and the rest of the car.

I sure hope as well that the X model has extra features apart from a stereo added. As that would be $5,000 for just a stereo otherwise.
