Batman:
what's the long term reliability and build quality like?
https://www.cnbc.com/video/2019/02/21/consumer-reports-no-longer-recommends-the-tesla-model-3.html
Talkiet:
What happened? The model 3 was going to be the mass market affordable car... The roadster was low volume/high price, The model S and S were meant to be higher volume, but a more reasonable price, and the Model 3 was meant to be the low cost mass market option that would compete with mid market dinosaur burners - that's the impression I had - clearly that's wrong.
But the Model 3 is (new) Audi S3 or (New) Mustang money. It's over twice the price of an entry level (New) Corolla for the entry level Model 3.
Sure the Model 3 is now classed as a luxury sedan (It has to be at that price!)
$75-113k?
Still, I think it's a great thing, it's going to help drive down the prices of really nice cars on the secondhand market a bit more :-)
N.
I definitely would not call any Teslas "luxury" – the interiors look like sterile medical rooms.

Luxury is not the same as features, and the features are not based on 25 dials and 87 lights. Luxury is comfort and no squeaky plastic

I do recall reading this here before. Elon shoulda bought car company, then setup an EV division.

“While Teslas perform well in Consumer Reports’ road tests and have excellent owner satisfaction, their reliability has not been consistent, according to our members, which has resulted in changes to their recommended status,”
So there is no hiding of the popularity. But its not reliable. Tell an Apple,e fan that an iPhone is not reliable. Same thing. Like Apple, Tesla is cool. Unlike Apple it may not Just Work
Its interesting with the consumer reports as they are based on cars from a number of months ago
Teslas are evolving as they go in some cases with weekly improvements,
by the time the boat arrives with the current batch they will have changed from when they were loaded onto the boat.
Its not like I buy a 2019 Nissan and its always going to be a 2019 Nissan
Teslas evolve as time goes by.
I know I hate this with Windows 10 but from what I can see Tesla seem to evolving with
regular updates they test fairly well before release.
I guess time will tell....
Based on a 10 year TOC I did for my use case of 25k km per year (6.0l V8 / 4 door sedan) - the Model 3 @ this price trounces the alternatives I would consider.
So I am encouraged by this price for the performance, features - especially seeing as I wont be buying new.
Will also be interesting to see how much they depreciate over time and what 2nd hand prices will be.

Im sure you are right, but if I buy any car from any manufacturer I know what I get. Im not keen on flying on a plane made by Panasonic, or a TV made by Boeing. Id fly and watch a device made by the rime manufacturer. Tesla should have bought a car manufacturer, than re invent a car
Tesla has kool aid appeal. Americans would buy it before any other EV. Id prefer a car made by a car maker, but I am unsure how battery and EV engines sit. Does Tesla have and dominate EV expertise, or are they just using EV expertise from the battery industry?
I'll ask someone here to buy me one, I will be your friend forever and make you a coffee once a day for the reset of my life.

When demand is more than supply, sometimes second hand cars cost more than new. Not common, but I've seen it happen and on more than one model.

The fact that Tesla started from scratch as an EV manufacture and never made ICE vehicles before is what appeals to me. They're not stuck trying to ram a square peg in a round hole like may other existing car OEMs are doing with their EVs. Yes, a Mercedes or Audi might roll of the factory floor with perfect panels perfectly coated in paint but their EV tech is years behind what Tesla is doing. If my Tesla comes to me with a wonky panel or a blemish in the paint that can be fixed and Tesla has been very good about fixing up those issues but there's nothing that can be done for outdated EV tech.

Suspension, braking, handling, build quality, safety systems, quality control, ergonomics, comfort, long term R&D divisions, mature part and component supply etc etc etc etc etc.
The large companies are going to blow Tesla out of the water in the next few years with their EVs. They are going to be better built, better value, more reliable, better supported and better to drive. Tesla had a great first mover advantage but first movers frequently don't end up winners.
There is so much more to making a good EV than the EV drivetrain and electronics.
I know this will offend the Tesla fans, but it's my opinion and I think we're already starting to see it.
Tesla are certainly ahead today on elements of the EV tech but if you think some of the largest companies in the world are going to let that go unanswered, then I have some interesting information for you about how much publicly traded companies like to make money.
