RobDickinson: Theres a few reasons I could suggest you'd buy a kona, you need a hatchback,.

That, plus company car dealer support is a factor. Tesla cannot provide that level of service in NZ yet.

They can and do, there are several fleets of Tesla model 3 in NZ already and they are on the gov approved list.

I wouldn't buy Tesla for a fleet. There are way too many issues with them. There are way better options for fleets and non fleets that are reliable and have better build quality. EG Kia

RobDickinson: Things you dont want at home:
700bar hydrogen storage

Imo not needed. Buy hydrogen from gas supplier as usual. Batch compress it and feed it to your car 50ml at a time. Pretty safe. It will take ages like.. overnight. Not available off the shelf, I think that's not a barrier for someone who had 150k to spend on a low volume car.

Hertz disagrees.

In regards to reliability, look at the FYI post on this forum someone has made about the Hyundai and Kia EV options

I come from personal experience. I came close to buying but when in 2021 a maker cannot build a car were the gap between the door and the A and B pillars are  uniform then there is a problem. When the lights on the presented car do not work and the display screen has issues there is a problem.  A customer of ours has just settled a dispute with Telsa for a new car that had 20+ faults.  Telsa ranks very poorly on the J D Power rankings for reliability. Telsa has some good IP but maybe they should licence their IP to an experienced auto manufacturer that can correctly coach build and has quality control.

But it ranks very highly on the satisfaction levels (according to a recent Stuff story).

Go figure.

Yeah, I'm going to put more value behind the decision of a company that buys and provides cars as a business who has chosen to buy 100k of a particular model than a person with a single antidote

Theres 4000ish owners of model 3 in NZ and no real problems that I know about.  but yeah whatever carry on. No one will force you to buy one

On the flip side Hyundai recalled every kona they sold here to replace the battery (not sure that has even happened yet).

Plus it looks like country of origin makes quite a difference - NZ-new M3s are made in Shanghai, with the QC of these apparently being much superior to the US-made cars. (Personally, I’d probably not be looking to get a Y if they were made in the US, but luckily RHD Ys are also Chinese-built.)

I have purchased many new cars over many years. I come from an automative family. I have purchased for fleets. I have never been presented for purchase a car in the state the Tesla was presented. I walked away from the deal. Given my time of purchasing presented vehicles have included  British built vehicles, Holden and French gives indication of how poor the Tesla was. The other example was given as that an example I have neither the time or the inclination to post further examples. A recent presentation on a popular UK car review site had a Tesla that had been provided for review with quality issues. So there you are. Just relating personal experience.

Tesla dont provide review cars now and have not for at least a couple of years.

But whatever. this thread really shouldnt be about tesla. Its about someone pushing for hydrogen passenger cars so hard he spent $150k of his own money (we assume) on a car he cant drive.

This is so comical, it has to be deliberate, and there has to be some kind of agenda in the background

  • No way Hyundai would have sold one of their demonstrators, without making it very clear that fueling infrastructure is extremely limited.
  • Paying $150k for something that is pritty much unusable. I don't think anybody drops this kind of coin on an unusual product without doing a bit of reading on it.
  • If it was just to try a hydrogen car, and winge about lack of fuel, a Used toyota one off the japan auctions for less than $10k would have done the same job (unless the very high price was part of the point).
  • "He believed hydrogen was the way to go because he thought electric cars powered with lithium batteries were not as sustainable. It also takes just five minutes to refuel the Nexo – a fraction of the time it takes an electric vehicle." - What? - Perhaps he missed that the Nexo has a 1.56kWh lithem battery pack, and ignored the impact of hydrogen production. But hyping the fast refilling time seems absolutely nuts given the unavailability of fast fueling stations. Some kind of EV would have made so much more sense.

In terms of the fueling issue, there are two real options:

  • Buy Manpac's of hydrogen from BOC and a compressor to get it up to 700 bar to fill the car.
  • Get a home hydrogen station (like simple.fuel) for cira USD300,000

Both are going to we woefully uneconomic.

Or use the car to lobby for somebody else to build a station, but I doubt many people will be willing to get into that for just a single car, when it seems clear that battery electric cars are a better light vehicle solution for New Zealand.
