I’m wondering what’s so special by the blade battery that they are quoting 550km from the 61kWh pack and 700km from the 81kWh pack in the Atto 4. Will it be tested downhill with a tail wind?

No idea, but given that the vast majority of drivers use ICE, they can see what pans out. Blade? Solid State? When prices mean that EV is close to ICE, the masses will have a good idea whats best. Over time prices get better, range gets longer, issues are ironed out, thats when the Bell Curve takes off (assuming supply can match demand. (I assume it will given the lead time)

I do like the look of the Atto 4, but then I think the Han is a handsome looking vehicle as well.

I believe the Blade batteries are much safer. They cope with being punctured without bursting into flames (which is quite a good thing if you are anywhere near!). I also think they are less prone to issues when charged to near full. I seem to remember Tesla had signed a deal with BYD to start using Blade batteries in their upcoming models.

+1 for the Han!!! :-)

I've posted a reply to some in the EV general topic.

Try to keep this topic for BYD only please.

What's "special" about the blade battery is that it's allegedly the safest battery. Other than that, it seems to have slightly better energy density than other LFP chemistry batteries and the large surface area is good for the heating and cooling of the batteries.

But no idea how or why theyd claim crazy ranges, because LFP is cheaper, safer and better for degradation but it's NOT energy dense ie not great for huge capacity packs or you have a large/heavy battery. Any gains in range wouldn't be from the battery but from the drag coefficient or improved motor efficiency (Permanent magnet synchronous motors have some physics induced problems at high revs... Maybe they use a different motor type?)

I think the main factor is China likes to use the NEDC range, which is just utter fantasy. I don't think most cars can achieve WLTP but at least that's within the ballpark lol

I got a Google alert this morning (many days late, as usual!) that noted deliveries of the Atto 3 in Aus have been pushed back 6-8 weeks (were apparently due to start this month).

https://thedriven.io/2022/07/04/all-electric-atto-3-delayed-despite-byd-june-production-record/

Is this likely to be the same in NZ (where I think deliveries were starting at the end of Aug)?

not far off the Model 3 WLTP. either this is CLTP or 160kg lighter.

do they standardise the weight of the person driving WLTP cycle or is it a lab test done with no wind resistance.

also a straight Model 3 copy!

New Zealand deliveries have not been pushed back. Today the demo models for chch are sitting in Lyttelton and the ship is heading to Wellington. Inside word is that you'll be able to see them in a dealership July 22nd and that they're saying the first customer cars are still on target for late August or early September

This is just speculation but,I think it's more a RHD production line as Macau, Hong Kong and Singapore are all now getting BYD Atto 3. Australia and New Zealand will be made on the same line.

According to the local dealer, BYD NZ placed an initial bulk order months ago, while Australia were taking more of a make-to-order approach. Others believe NZ is getting the cars first destined for Australia but they can't be used yet due to more complex requirements for accepting the make and model. No way to really tell what's true

Upshot is the first people to order in NZ may only get waiting 2 months, while some people in Australia have been waiting since March (probably doesn't sound bad to Tesla people lol)

I am ok with external design but the interior will need to be seen in real life. The interior on initial views looks ok but is quite polarising in its design, still orders of magnitude better than the ergonomic and safety mess that is Tesla. I look forward to seeing the BYD offerings in real life.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

The Wellington dealer told me there were 300 cars on the shipment to NZ so that lines up with the availability for Kiwis. They are all the Long Range model which suits me.

I saw an article that said BYD had not submitted anything for ANCAP testing in Australia yet and there is normally some lead time to get a car safety rated.

BYD has said the cars will be 5 stars - But as they have not been tested they aren't.

It was speculated that some of the delays in supply were because of not being rated - Of course they could still sell them and hope they do get 5 stars.

If you bought one and it doesn't attain 5 stars do you get you money back?

Can you insure an unrated car?

I am not saying they are in any way unsafe - But selling/delivering before a rating has been done seems a little bit of an issue...

Apparently Porsche and Tesla didn't provide ANCAP test results, was still sold, Tesla now has ANCAP rating but not Porsche, Model Y currently does not have an ANCAP

so maybe it's not crash testing

i cannot find a single ANCAP for any Porsche
