It's quite sweet that you expect government decisions to make sense. I hope you never lose that sense of wonder.

Agreed - if they were capable, we wouldn't be having this discussion because they would have already done something by now.

Gordy7:
Just comparing cost of energy sources.
Location is northern Hawkes Bay and as noted in my table I used uncontrolled kWh rate. I did not look into cheaper kWh options.

I see. Yeah, that's certainly worse case. Meridian has an EV plan available which gives you decent night rates of 11.82c/kWh

Any word on the China sourced Teslas re built quality? i.e. paint quality, panel gaps, general fit and finish, etc.

Tesla’s made-in-China cars are leading the market when it comes to quality, according to a new survey.

All while Tesla’s US-made vehicles are scoring the lowest for quality.

As we reported earlier this year, Tesla ranked lowest on J.D. Power 2020 quality study, with 250 problems per 100 cars.

The quality survey was based on roughly 1,250 Tesla owners and the vast majority of respondents own a Model 3.

In a surprising turn of events, a similar survey produced in China shows that Tesla is leading the market on quality with its Model 3 vehicles produced at Gigafactory Shanghai.

According to a new survey compiled by 12365Auto, the average passenger car in China gets 37.2 “complaints” regarding quality per 10,000 cars over the last quarter.

Over the same period, Made-in-China Model 3 only received 0.7 complaints – topping the chart.

Anyone seen any physically small EVs, or hybrids even?
The ability to charge at home on a standard wall plug, and never have to go near a petrol station again really appeals.

Want something to zip into car parks, small turning circle, not too long (say under 4.2m) and with surround cameras. Thought that would be a real market segment for a second city car.

The Renault Zoe is quite small, as is the BMW i3. Unfortunately I don't think either have a surround view

@Jaxson Honda e ticks all those boxes - designed as a city car with some good parking features and surround cameras. Mini Electric would be the other one to consider, but don't think the cameras are as good as the Honda.

Unfortunately the Honda isn't sold in NZ and has only been privately imported from the UK by around 5 people so far.

Yeah, I've seen the odd (new UK import?) Honda e pop up for sale, but nothing through the official channel yet. On board 2kW 240v inverter too.

Thanks all,

Yeah a lot of the traditional common go to models aren’t actually made anymore, or if they come to NZ don’t offer the hybrid option etc.

From memory the note and Honda E (or fit?) aren’t offered locally.

The new jazz is announced soon, with agents hearing about it this weekend, but no surround camera either.
Jazz is electric but has a ice to charge the battery, and no physical gearbox connection to wheels.

(360 camera request sounds fussy, but man if you’ve used one you’ll know what the want is about, even a front camera alone). Nissan Juke has one but not hybrid.

New model Nissan lead is too long now.

I think only the new Leaf has true surround parking assist, but I wouldn't recommend buying a new Leaf with its antiquated battery tech - second hand with decent depreciation, sure. EVs are still trying to shed cost where they can to make their sticker price attractive, so small (aka entry level) EVs are pretty minimal on what they offer feature wise.

Yeah just finding this a market segment that’s pretty empty at the moment.
Small, compact, tight turning radius, good visibility etc.

Parking assist in terms of full driving is cool, but even more basic 360 birds view cameras are extremely handy, but don’t feature on smaller cars. The tech for surround view cameras looks to be under $500 on AliExpress, and nearly all manufacturers offer the same plugin I’m sure - Mazda, Nissan, Toyota and Mitsubishi 360cam setups look suspiciously similar...

I would have thought there would be a market for something small for city purposes, not focussing on massive range but daily commute and functionality in tight parking garages etc when you get into the city.

That bmw i3? looks to be the closest, but is pretty weird looking 😂
Doesn’t review well crash test safety wise either.

Yeah if you can't compromise on the 360 view parking assist then there's really no options in that smaller class. However if you can go without that then are at least the two options I mentioned previously.

Fully recommend the BMW i3 for this application. Had one for a while, and it is a very cool car. 360 degree camera's not offered, but mine had 4x proximity sensors on each end and a display showing the car from the top down and any objects in proximity.

3,999mm long, 1775mm wide, turning circle 9.86m, and 125kW RWD. Has a fairly high seating position, and squared off bonnet so viability is generally good.

If you have shopping for a new car, the $60k mini electric could be worth a look. 3845mm long, 1727 wide, 10.7m turning circle.

Another NZ new option is the  the 4.08m long Zoe.

The kona electric also comes in under your threshold at 4.18m long. This is 1.8m wide though, and does have the feel of driving a medium car.

If you are willing to buy a UK import (or have one imported for you), there is a raft of options: Peugeot e-208,Vauxhall Corsa-e, Honda E,  Volkswagen e-Up.

The honda E is partially special from that list. A taupo based EV dealer has one in stock at $70k. 3894mm long, 1752mm wide, 9.2m turning circle, cute styling and loaded with tech.

Perhaps the ultimate small carpark car is the Smart car. Two seater, Ac charging only (no fast charging), but they do have an actively cooled battery pack so should outlast the leaf's:

2nd gen: 2,695mm long, 1559mm wide. - Quite a few of these in NZ as they were sold new in Japan. Pop up on trademe now and then, and are often in the Japan auctions. $10k - $20k.

3th gen: 2659mm long, 1663mm wide, 6.95m turning circle (kerb to kerb) - I havn't seem any of these here, or on the japan auctions, so would need to have one imported from the UK. Would be quite a special car. I like the looks better than the older cars.

@MarkH67: I actually find it fascinating that so many people make the assumption that EVs will pay the same RUC as diesel cars, with no evidence that this is the case.  The fact is that we don't know what RUC rate EVs will eventually be charged, or when they will start being charged.

You are assuming everyone else is assuming! 😂 Rock-soil evidence is that prior to the EV RUC exemption EV's did indeed pay the same RUC as diesels. There is no evidence that anything will change. We know exactly when RUC will restart - 01 Jan 2022 unless the Govt changes their mind beforehand. Road user charges are not a diesel thing - they are a non-petrol thing. Any road going vehicle powered by a fuel that is not road-taxed at the pump pays RUC. Diesel, steam, wood-gas etc, all pay RUC.
