I guess at least a workable solution to have a seperate rate for BEV & PHEV but I do feel both are too high in comparison to petrol taxes.

AA website says petrol excise is ~$0.77 per litre. If you have a hybrid car doing say 5L per 1,000KM that is $58.50. So PHEVs/BEVs are heavier and hence get charged more?

I was doing some rough adding on the drive home after hearing the news, I spend about $140-$150/month on 91 where I mostly commute to work, the mrs who has a Gen 1 Leaf and does around 750km a month commuting to work adds around $40-50/month to the power bill. This plus the new RUC charge doesn't create a huge difference between ICE and Electric.

Yeah, I’d say this announcement just wiped a bit of value off PHEVs - I’d be gutted if I owned one. Govt should have waited until they put the ICE fleet into RUCs

The Leafs we've owned return around 6km/kWh. Maybe look at charging with a low off peak rate to reduce your charging costs. Not too hard to find night rates below 20c/kWh which means ~3.5c/km. Add 7.6c RUC and total running costs become ~11c/km.

ICEV using 6L/100km at $3.00/L = 18c/km (put your own consumption rate for your case).

Public charging rates will bring EV's 'fuel' costs to around ICEV fueling cost for equivalent vehicles and once RUCs become distance based for all vehicles the whole economy thing will need a rethink.

Sure, if their goal wasn't to discourage EV usage. But it was. Hence the not waiting thing.

They aren’t about discouraging EVs (RUCs for EVs were coming in 1 April under the last govt). But to put PHEVs in the same bracket, albeit with a slight discount on RUCs, is quite a bit shite. The current govt states all vehicles should move to RUCs, which bugger all people would disagree with, but for the time being - PHEVs are gonna be double-taxed.

Checking the odometer reading each time you get a WOF is going to be interesting since new cars don't WOF's for up to two years IIRC. So you could be way out of sync with what you paid and what you drive before they find out.

no different than for diesels. but RUC's are not a WOF item. RUC is up to police to police. police checkpoints etc. i've seen diesels that have had 200,000km owing. the fine for that i think is double (maybe triple these days??) the amount owing.

I don't even know how to find the odometer reading in the MG.

Mitsubishi may as well leave the NZ market. Outlander and Eclipse Cross sales will fall off a cliff.

wellygary:

.... and its official

From 1 April 2024

Pure BEV regular sub 3.5 tonne rate of  $76/1000km,

PHEVs $53/1000

there is a two month transition before any enforcement (which will mainly a WOF odometer check)

Then there is the administration fee on top $12.44 if done online. That is including another tax of GST in that charge. Glad I haven’t brought EV and have no intention of getting one for next car.

It's this fee that actually annoys me more than anything else. I'm happy to pay RUC, but the fee is far higher than the actual transaction costs and in theory with more users, this should be spread further therefore lowering the transaction costs.
