EV Discounts are now a thing - Government offers $8625 discount on EVs, reviving policy killed by NZ First | Stuff.co.nz

It'll help with the Nissan Leaf I feel but won't make a Tesla feel much cheaper

somebody make a list of all the current EV prices now.

in a few months they will go up by $8625

I hope the government has processes to deal with that, and excludes manufacturers if they do that

That's called "price fixing," and the Commerce Commission won't like it.

I hope we don't see prices going up now. Hope they don't use 'inflation' as an excuse.

......

They also said that lower income people will usually buy second hand cars, and they wouldn't be affected. But surely if new car prices rise, more people will buy second hand, and supply and demand will push prices up. Didn't they learn anything from the housing market with supply and demand? Plus these new more expensive cars will become more expensive second hand cars eventually.

Remember it isn't just a flat rate on new utes etc - more fuel efficient vehicles have less "tax" on them, so the theory would be to encourage ute and SUV buyers toward the more fuel efficient new models, or the dealers/manufacturers to bring in the"better" vehicles so as not to lose market share.

The car market has a lot more supply than the housing (although there is a constraint due to chips at the moment) - you can't easily ship a house in from overseas :D

However I think the auction price of Second hand EVs and PHEVs in Japan will go up as more people are looking to buy, so may start to cancel out the feebate

Best idea would be to buy this week - by the time it gets here - you will qualify for the feebate :)

only if they get caught. i'm picking there will be a list of excuses they can use.

You seem to be getting economic sense confused with ideology.🤔 Otherwise why is the rebate limited to  vehicles under $80000? Don’t electric vehicles at $80000+ save emissions? Or is it a stealth ‘tax’ on the rich?

Is the tax on ‘high emitters’ limited to vehicles under $80000 as well?

I am disappointed that hybrids (non plug in) do not attract any form of rebate.

Not a bad idea, but I doubt New Zealand going to purchase enough used Japanese imports to make a difference.

If one does it, they'll lose market share. If they all do it, it would be very hard to argue it was anything but price fixing. And if the ComCom feel they actually can't do anything, they'll make sure they get the power from the government. The ComCom have real teeth.

anyway, someone tell me which is the best currently available EV that gets the most discount?

From the examples released already it appears that all EVs get the same rebate.

As I understand it, we already take practically all the inventory we can get.

They need to meet 3 Star Rightcar (https://rightcar.govt.nz/) Safety Rating, so that would nix bikes.

It is a bad thing though, because older cars are likely going to be less safe and more inefficient, and this gets worse as they age.

Ultimately no, it's not. It stops new ICE vehicles from entering the fleet. Yes, newer ICE vehicles are more efficient (when they don't lie...😉) than older cars but do those improvements make up for the emissions in making the vehicle and shipping it here? Probably not.

I looked at buying a hybrid last year, and was put off for three reasons:

1/ this rebate was scotched by NZ First,

2/ All vendors I spoke to were unwilling to make any commitments on battery replacements - how long should they last, how much might it cost. Eventually I got 'about 8 years and $9k' out of Toyota for the RAV4. Appreciate its hard to predict into the future but I would have expected a boilerplate answer on this.

Although a battery is not really required for a hybrid, having a depleted one means 250kg of deadweight adding to fulltime petrol consumption. not ideal

3/ The facilities in NZ for refurbishing or recycling them. We already have poor facilities in general for recycling, cant do tyres with any success, and now we are starting down the path of these little nasties.

The key for me is we cant trade ignorance or 'not knowing' the impact. We know the impact of producing batteries - and its terrible. If NZ is going to make a genuine commitment to climate work, at least demonstrating something like an agency to look at recycling all these materials would be a start.

Who's problem is it, aside from all of us? I hope we get there before we have a mountain of LiON batteries to process

i don't understand. we don't make EVs locally and making EVs also cost emissions. and child labour mining the rare earth material.
