RobDickinson:
Back to the model 3 (or similar priced EV) - am I right in thinking as a business buyer you can claim GST back so the SR+ would be just under $50k to buy ( ing GST removal and rebate).
And you can claim 14,000 worth of mileage at $0.79c, $11,000 a year (minus around $400 in electricity..)?
Bringing things back on topic...I'd actually like to know the answer to that.

Picked up my Model 3 in Auckland on Wednesday and drove it down the country to Dunedin, arriving on Saturday.
Total cost in electricity - $47 via ChargeNet chargers (5 chargers via Superchargers were free, rough cost per charge $23NZ)
Great experience, great car .. will take a significant amount of learning to figure out all the things that it can do.
OK there is a GST component of the rebate you cant count ?

AIUI, this is correct: the IRD reimbursement provision is "The Tier 1 rate is a combination of your vehicle's fixed and running costs. Use the Tier 1 rate for the business portion of the first 14,000 kilometres travelled by the vehicle in a year. This includes private use travel. The Tier 2 rate is for running costs only. Use the Tier 2 rate for the business portion of any travel over 14,000 kilometres in a year."
Note: for the avoidance of doubt, I am not a tax advisor or a financial advisor. Anybody who needs tax advice or financial advice should consult an appropriately qualified professional.

For specific tax advice one would need to engage a professional who is allows to provide that advice. (I am not).
My understanding is that this is how it works, but I am largely guessing:
Regarding the GST thing. Yes, as with any vehicle, a GST registered business can claim back the GST on the model 3.
$60,107 / 1.15 = $52,227 excl GST. (But this would need to be compared with the GST exclusive prices of other vehicles).
If a (non taxi, non ute / tray truck) 5 seater business vehicle is used for any personal use (such as commuting home from work), FBT needs to be paid.
GST needs to be charged by the business when they sell the tesla.
Re mileage at 79c/km, you can't stack this on top of the above. It is the rate that can be used for reimbursement for business use of a private car. The IRD is what my old employer would pay when we used private cars for business travel ($350 to run my old corolla for a round trip Auckland to rotorua which it would do on under $100 in fuel - sweet deal). Alternatively actual running costs may be used. I think there might be a rule that says self employed people need to use actual costs.
You can't claim the GST and take it as a business car AND claim the milage in addition. That is only for when you use your own car for business.
If it is a business vehicle you can claim all running costs (insurance, electricity used, servicing etc) for the portion the vehicle is used for business purposes.
And as PoliceGuy stated: Don't rely on him or me for our advice on accounting, talk to a qualified professional.

The fee for the "proper advice" will of course include a contribution towards the advisor's Professional Indemnity Insurance in case their advice should prove to be wrong, and expensive for you

Question - should fsd drive like you should or how people do?
because we know the two dont measure up.
And if you end up behind someone driving like you should its usually a pain in the ass.
edit - skip it its not really ev related
Matthias Schmidt on Twitter : EU Commission will later today reveal that they plan on banning the sale of new passengers cars that emit CO2 from 2035 onwards. - https://twitter.com/auto_schmidt/status/1415214883893915651
Nice move but I am struggling to imagine a situation where people are buying new petrol powered passenger vehicles past 2030 in Europe anyhow - outside of a few extreme edge cases.?
