Batman:

luckily a car is just being made that doesn't need you to use an ipad to move the seats or turn on the wipers

I watched this earlier today, nice car. Does anyone know if the Kia EV6 is it's twin?

yes and no.

yes because the chassis / skeleton is exactly the same

the motor and battery type is likely to be exactly the same - but we don't know that yet

but everything else is different. from how it drives to the build (the ioniq 5 and ev6 look completely different)

Yes indeed - "Today, we’re taking a look at two cars coming out of parent company Hyunda - the IONIQ 5 and the Kia EV6. Although both share a huge amount of DNA, especially under the skin, there are some differences between them. So we’re gonna dive into the details and see how these sister cars compare."

https://insideevs.com/features/508357/hyundai-ioniq5-kia-ev6-info/

I'm really looking forward to both these cars getting to NZ - will be two of the very few family-usuable BEVs* that, in lower-spec versions, will come in under $80k.

* By this I mean large enough to be suitable for my family of four including a teenager, and with a large enough boot to be able to use it on holiday.

if kia follows the trend of its ICE vehicles, their equivalent trims vs hyundai are about 10k cheaper with about 2x more standard equipment

fingers crossed ...

Re burning hydrogen, its a terrible idea for efficiency but then if you have limitless quantities of green hydrogen it should work (hint we dont).

1kg of h2 takes 44kwh to make, has 33kwh of energy, you loose 28% of that through compression and storage so that gets you 24kwh or so, and then you burn it at 30% efficiency , so get 7kwh or so of energy out of it...

Lord Bamford makes some very pertinent observations in that video about the hydrogen powered JCB machines.

Right at the moment EV's have an advantage particularly for light vehicles, but I wouldn't discount the the use of hydrogen in the future. Both energy sources, that is batteries and hydrogen, have their challenges. Technological advancements will change the relative merits of both types of energy. I reckon there will be leap frog changes where each energy source will take the lead at various points.

In my opinion nuclear fusion will be the enabler for the world to be free of fossil fuels. Until then we will be fiddling around the fringes.

We dont need fusion. Though I see it as a solid baseline option for count riels like UK renewable (hydro, solar, wind) is already here and cheaper than the alternative. We just need more of it.

And I dont see why you'd burn hydrogen in a JCB, its quite a peaky load that would more benefit from a battery and fuel cell, the FC doesnt even need to be that large just able to keep up with the average load over time.  hell you are storing the hydrogen anyhow why burn it.

New Zealand might end up being an outlier with respect to nuclear fusion but there is no denying from a world perspective that is where the future lies.

Obviously you didn't watch the video. The reason for using hydrogen and also not using a fuel cell was explained.

No, no I didnt watch the video, I have no interest in watching 2 boomers tell me why they want to carry on burning stuff.

There's no getting around the fact that I can get power from a plug at home and I'm unlikely to ever have my own hydrogen filling station.

Which means continuing to pay a movement tax in the form of generating a return on investment for whatever it costs in future dollars to create a hydrogen filling station for a private operator in the future.

Why keep doing things the way we do now with greater cost if we don't have to?

For me, judging by the unethical practices of the fossil fuel unjustly, I have no faith that the mass cheap hydrogen would not come from cracking poor quality unethical fossil fuel and coal deposit. Alot easier than hydrolysis of water.

Back to the news. Mazda MX30 EV is here in NZ:

https://www.mazda.co.nz/cars/mx-30/electric

Modest range at 225km. Smaller battery gives better power to weight and 8 year / 160kkm warranty. Looks like an absolute winner in the town SUV segment. Only the Takami spec will be sold in NZ hence 75k before rebate.

$74,990

35kwh battery

107kw motor

50kw DC charging, 6.6kw AC charging

Range 224km but no idea on what rating, WLTP combined is 200(124miles)

The wallbox is $800 of value max.

The mini electric smashes it for $15k less.

Explained by Takami spec for MX meaning heated seats and steering wheel, Bose sound system, other extras. Imo Madza made an excellent marketing decision with this one.

So that’s $75k for the privilege of having to fit in two charging stops to drive from Wellington to Auckland, and you’d still arrive with a depleted battery. Pass

I suspect this is the Hydrogen plant in Germany Lord Bamford speajks of in the video

https://www.power-technology.com/news/siemens-begins-work-on-8-75mw-green-hydrogen-plant-in-germany/

I like where JCB are thinking, if as a customer, you are spending in the 100,000 pounds region on a new excavator, you want that machine working and earning. Having it be down for charging means it isn't earning.

It was on the weekend when I watched the video, so forgive me if my numbers aren't quite right, but according to the information JCB are getting off there machines, a 20 ton excavator could be working for sometimes up to 12-14 hours at a time over 2 shifts.

Having a 20-ton excavator off batteries meant making the machine heavier, upgrading the components of the machine to handle the additional weight, and nearly doubled the cost of the machine.

I can see the use case for Hydrogen in this heavy machine industry, whether it filters to cars, time will tell.

In the UK at least, a second generation Toyota Mirai has recently come to market
