dafman:

gzt: Back to the news. Mazda MX30 EV is here in NZ:

https://www.mazda.co.nz/cars/mx-30/electric@
So that’s $75k for the privilege of having to fit in two charging stops to drive from Wellington to Auckland

If that's your criteria it's not the car for you. Simple as that.

100% agree. All this debate EV vs petrol vs hydrogen debate stuff needs it's own topic. One of these posters is brave enough to start one surely ; ). I'd actually participate if it wasn't in this topic..

RobDickinson: The mini electric smashes it for $15k less.

Mini? Not when it comes to boot space, cabin room. Sound system + other Takami features. The list is long.

It probably does need its own topic.

However there always seems to be a need to make a comparison to an ICE on this thread. Like this post here. https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=162&topicid=197896&page_no=346#2742153

Says the man who recommended a Mini. Do you work for Mini? : ).

It is, with a lot more bling and comfort. Add to that the people who trust Mazda ahead of those brands and I think they have a winner.

Lets compare them.

Tesla Model 3 SR+ price (before the feebate discount): $66,900
Mazda MX30 price (before the feebate discount): $74,990

Tesla Model 3 SR+, real world range: 340 KM
Mazda MX30, real world range: 170 KM

Tesla Model 3 SR+ 0-100: 5.6 seconds
Mazda MX30 0-100: 9.7 seconds.

So a $8000 premium for a car with half the range and almost half the acceleration?

Mazda isn't that brilliant of a brand to warrant that difference.

Granted $8000 is a big premium but that is a pretty basic comparison. There's more to buying a vehicle than range and outright speed. For example at first glimpse the Mazda has a better warranty. Mazda also explain why they have given the ranges they have to the MX30, based around the environmental impacts of producing the battery.

I think it has more to do with revenue for Mazda than anything else. I think the battery they have chosen for the MX30 is too small.

BTW: It has lousy charging speed too.

The Tesla can charge at 570 km per hour, the Mazda at 180 km/h.

The Mazda would have been interesting when the first Leaf was launched, for a car in 2021 it is really not a winner.

RobDickinson: Personally (and I like mazdas) I think its appalling value.

Forgot the mention this comes with free fast charge AC Wallbox for a limited time.

It's nearly twice the price of the MG for comparable range, and you could spend $300 to have an electrician install a caravan plug outlet that will nearly fully recharge the battery from 0 overnight anyway. My opinion on this one remains that this is a 'screw you I don't wanna build an EV' car.

Mazda's "analysis" of the impacts of the battery have you throwing away a 60kWh or larger battery in 5 years. My nearly-6-year-old 30kWh Leaf is now annoying me but still gets me around day to day ... if it had started with 60kWh it would still have more range than the real one did fresh from the factory.

In other words, Mazda is talking rubbish. Doubly so if you compare the mass of non-recyclable petrol you would have burned over the same distance.
