For example as of May VW group is looking at 8000 euro fine per vehicle sold in 2021...

Isn't this how Tesla makes a stack of cash - selling back credits to other legacy automakers who haven't managed to roll out their own EVs?

Yep thats one way, a useless by-product to tesla but say FCA paid them 2bn Euro for 2021, pretty much paying for giga berlin.

Car Advice AU: 2021 BYD EA1: Australia’s “sub-AUD $35,000” electric car revealed

2021 April

The budget hatchback will have a range of 500km and accelerate from 0-100km/h in 'less than 5.0 seconds', according to the Australian importer.

New details of the upcoming BYD electric hatchback – which importer Nexport claims will be sold in Australia for “well under AUD $35,000” when order books open later this year – have been revealed exclusively to CarAdvice.

The Chinese-built five-door – which was unveiled as the EA1 in China last week, but will be sold locally under a different nameplate – has a range of approximately 500km, according to Nexport founder Luke Todd.

For reference, the MG ZS EV, which is currently the cheapest electric car offered in Australia from AUD $43,990 drive-away, has a claimed range of just 263km.

imported by these people I think
https://evdirect.com.au/e6/

The E6 should be ~ $34-35k on the road here after rebate, and the AE1 (or whatever its called, dolphin?) should be cheaper still.

Might be one for next year though

Batman: https://www.google.co.nz/m?q=ferrari+emissions+fine

Unless I'm mistaken, a bit of unintended consequences: manufactures will have a hard time avoiding fines for light-weight petrol city cars, than heavy vehicles.

So manufacturers will likely be killing off small ICE city cars, which could encourage more petrol SUV and ute sales.

Or we may get companies adopt the "bedroom mattress" technique:: hundreds of an almost identical products, with just enough variations to be considered different models.

I got the chance to take a Ford Escape PHEV for a short test drive. While not a BEV, my 25 km drive was 90% completed on battery so that’s why I’m commenting in this thread. I have previously tested the Niro and Outlander PHEVs.

The model driven was the higher specced one ($67k) with HUD, pano sunroof, electric tailgate, etc. I was impressed with how smoothly it ran. Less road noise than a RAV4*, smoother drivetrain than the Niro PHEV and a more car-like handling experience than the Outlander PHEV.

The Escape PHEV only comes in FWD as Ford chose to stick with a mechanical (driveshaft + transfer case) 4WD system rather than electric in their hybrid Escape (not available in NZ). The battery configuration in the PHEV doesn’t allow room for the mechanical drive but at least it means there is space for a full sized spare wheel under the luggage area. While AWD may be a nice to have, I can think of approximately zero occasions when I’ve needed AWD since I last owned a vehicle that wasn’t FWD (30 years). I didn’t like the fact that the Escape runs on 95 octane because that goes against my skinflint nature, but I understand it is a European thing where the push is to more efficient, higher compression ICEs. As an aside, I’d love to know how the fuel companies justify the big difference between 91 and 95 fuel, the gap has widened.

Anyhow, back to the Escape PHEV. It’s infotainment system is superior (IMO) to either the Kia or Mitsubishi offerings. The seating is comfortable and there is good headroom, even with the sunroof. It’s towing capability (700/1200kg un/braked) is down a little on competitors, but I only tow a domestic trailer mostly. It certainly will be in the mix next time a purchase is being considered.

* I include the RAV4 in the comparison because, with the CCD and promotional discounts, the cost of the Escape (as tested) is virtually the same as the hybrid RAV4 limited. If only Toyota would see their way clear to bringing the RAV4 Prime into NZ, I probably would have one on order (as long as the RRP was <$80k of course).

US Transportation Secretary on why Tesla wasn't invited to US President Biden EV event: 'I'm not sure'

CNBC Television

President Biden has signed an executive order dictating that 50 percent of the vehicles sold in the U.S. will be electric by 2030. The White House will hold an event Thursday with executives from General Motors, Ford Motor and Chrysler parent Stellantis to discuss the policy. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg joins 'Squawk Box' to break it down.

kingdragonfly: US Transportation Secretary on why Tesla wasn't invited to US President Biden EV event: 'I'm not sure'

Why would they invite Tesla?  If they are talking about moving to electric then what would they say to Elon?

Biden: "Hey Elon, we would like to see you speed up the move to electric."

Elon: "Well, Tesla is already at 100%, how much higher do we need to go?"

If you are discussing the change to electric then it makes sense to invite those making fossil fuel burners and talking to them about making the transition.

They were not invited because it was a UAW event for the unions.

Tesla could you know , help the other manufacturers do better ..? Because they already know how.

RobDickinson:

The UAW seems to be all over the place, sometimes opposing, sometimes for. I guess it's no surprise that younger representatives like EV's and are more pro-environment than the UAW president.

CNET: UAW and automakers urge Biden to adopt expansive EV strategy

The United Auto Workers union and Alliance for Automotive Innovation, which represents a number of major automakers, have encouraged the Biden administration to adopt a laundry list of pro-EV proposals, arguing the recommendations provide the keys to the US' success in a transition to electric vehicle sales and manufacturing.

In a letter sent to President Joe Biden on Tuesday, the groups called for sweeping investments into raw material refinement and battery production, but also urged the administration to boost public awareness of EVs and their benefits, and asked the federal government to consider an expansion of tax credits currently available to EV buyers.

Reuters: Biden seeks to make half of new U.S. auto fleet electric by 2030

...Biden has repeatedly resisted calls from many Democrats to set a binding requirement for EV adoption or to follow California and some countries in setting 2035 as a date to phase out the sale of new gasoline-powered light-duty vehicles in the face of opposition by the United Auto Workers (UAW) union

UAW President Ray Curry, who attended the event, noted the EV goal but said the union was focused "on preserving the wages and benefits that have been the heart and soul of the American middle class."

I’m going to wait a few more years before I get back into the PHEV/EV game again. I’ve got a few resiliency concerns that I’ve experienced first hand and have seen enough poor experiences in both New Zealand and Australia across multiple makes to see that this is something that needs to be pegged down.

Completely sold on the Toyota synergy drive which has proven its reliability to both myself and the world at large with cars truly surviving the test of time and distance. Till things improve my household will stay on a hybrid and diesel.
