Sorry for the slight drift.

Model 3 V Chevy Silverado in a car wash. The Silverado didn't look badly scratched, however the Model 3?

Model 3 is best car to be in if there's a crash, largely due to big crumple zones. It crumples.

That Dodge truck would just kill you. Spam in a can. Pea in bucket.

Sure. The vehicle wins. The people in it maybe not so much in a high speed impact. But, yeah ... Fender bender in a car wash.... Especially if the heavy vehicle just kept on pushing.

it's in newton's law. always ride in the heavier vehicle in a crash between 2 vehicles. so it's not tesla will win. tesla (dodge) vs another vehicle of same mass, maybe tesla (dodgle) will win dependng on the angle of impact. tesla (dodge) vs train, good luck. tesla (dodge) vs daihatsu mirage, tesla (dodge) would win.

anyway, maybe this will explain - http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/truckc.html

Yep you are correct i.e. the heavier vehicle (in this case the TRUCK) "wins".

However - how the passengers fare inside a vehicle in a crash is all about the way said vehicle transfers energy from the crash into the vehicle and not the passengers - and this is all about design, crumple zones, safety cells, restraints, airbags etc.

what i'm saying is, if a 500-star tesla model 3 crashes with a truck at a decent speed, the passengers will still die. crumple zones only work up to a certain point. in fact the driver of the self drive model died rear ending a truck (trailer) at low speed. in that case, crumple zone was useless and the higher Dodge truck would have worked better. so the answer is it really depends - though in general, when two things collide, you'd want to be in the heavier vehicle even if it didn't crumple. (definitely not the mitsubishi van whose passenger cell completely implodes - that's a different matter altogether).

Regarding the Trailer accidents (there has been two) with Tesla and autopilot. I think this sums it up pretty well:

"the circumstances of the crash indicate that while driving at highway speeds, the system remains incapable of detecting some stationary objects, or those moving perpendicular to the car. Similar systems offered by Volvo and Nissan have the same shortcoming. That’s because radar is typically used to look for moving things, to filter out false positives like highway signs and overpasses, says Matt Johnson-Roberson, who codirects the University of Michigan Ford Center for Autonomous Vehicles. "

From Wired's article about the accidents.

and as an extension to the dodge truck comparison, becasue the truck has a higher build it wouldn't have gone under the trailer causing decapitation, so truck would fare better even if it didn't crumple.

Went for a bit of a drive in my Model 3 last week. This is one day of driving. I had gone down to the Wellington area to pick up some DC fast charger VR images I had missed because the sites are new. Than I went back via Napier for the same reason. Not having to charge the car very often....and using Tesla Superchargers at 129kw....certainly saves a lot of time.

Hey mate, how were the super chargers? How much time did you spend on them and did this add significant time to your journey compared to a standard petrol car journey?

I'm not trying to encourage range anxiety, but it still nice to know what happens in the worst case.

What to do if your Tesla runs out of juice

Bjørn Nyland

I purposely run my car down to zero to show you what happens and what you have to do to recover. The best solution is to charge up before you run out.

While running out of electricity is not something you want to do, running out of fuel in an ICE can be a lot worse.

From the article:

  • your car's catalytic converter, which is part of the exhaust system, can be damaged.
  • You could also get debris stuck in your fuel pump by running your tank too low. That's because any tiny particles that find their way into the gas tank settle at the bottom, and they tend to stay there until your car is trying to grab every last bit of fuel it can.
  • In some cars, the fuel pump is located in the gas tank, and the gas acts like insulation and lubricant as it flows around the pump. If you're constantly running your gas tank dry, the fuel pump could be overheating, which will cause it to wear out prematurely.

So seems to me that the hassle of running out of electricity is nothing compared to the damage running out of fuel in your ICE car can do.
