cokemaster: I’m going to wait a few more years before I get back into the PHEV/EV game again. I’ve got a few resiliency concerns that I’ve experienced first hand and have seen enough poor experiences in both New Zealand and Australia across multiple makes to see that this is something that needs to be pegged down.

Completely sold on the Toyota synergy drive which has proven its reliability to both myself and the world at large with cars truly surviving the test of time and distance. Till things improve my household will stay on a hybrid and diesel.

It would probably help the community if you were to mention which EV you had and what those poor experiences were.

https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=162&topicid=288380 has all the fun in it ;)

I’ve come across similar resiliency experiences with that model, Mercedes, Nissan, and Renault.

If anyone’s watching the Olympics Marathon and wondering what the weird UMPIRE1 Car is, it’s the Toyota LQ Concept:

I do agree that synergy drives (Toyota Prius most famously) do get snubbed.

I hate to quote Elon Musk, but "the best part is no part" so it's an EV for me

I thought this video would give obvious advice, but surprisingly there are some quirks in the Toyota Hybrid. For instance, I'd be inclined to use the "B" mode constantly, thinking it was charging my battery downhill.

Never do THIS to your Toyota Hybrid New edition!

I'd suggest a hybrid thread for hybrid discussion. I think it's off topic here. The short answer is Toyota does an a incredible job of engineering these cars for Joe average driving habits. It's deep. Pressing all the knobs and buttons manually is usually just counter-productive.

Jeez, a twenty minute video? Surely five things could be listed?

@kingdragonfly - the problem is that whilst the part count may go down, when things go wrong… you better have a big credit limit as the fault will typically lie with the battery or electric motors, both of which are 10’s of thousands to replace.

I know that there are parts in ICE cars which can cost similar amounts but their failure rates are very rare and typically covered under warranties (in the case of our Prius V).

I see they ran out of electricity tonight. Hopefully they'll fix that before everyone is charging Teslas!
