@jonathan18 I would suggest your move away from a hybrid in favour of a BEV is wise. The way I see it hybrids' primary reason of existence is to provide extended travel range over just a battery, with the added weight, maintenance and environmental impact of an ICE. As battery technology improves beyond what most drivers consider an acceptable battery range the purpose of owning a hybrid will cease to exist and they will become a white elephant with little resaleability. It wouldn't be advisable to be 'holding the baby' when this comes to pass.

As metioned previously, the Model 3 was second to the Ranger for most popular passenger vehicle in September. This also brought Tesla as a company to be the fourth highest in overall passenger vehicle sales, with Toyota, Mitsubishi and Ford ahead. Overall, 21% of new vehicles sold in September had some kind of electric drive train (that number includes hybrids).

I read f1 are seriously considering retiring the hybrid because they think it has no future. Not sure if they will go ahead. But then moving to only fossil fuel because it has a future? Weird

Yeah by the measurements online on US sites its 50 inches vs 52 inches.. odd..

time to check the bjorn videos imo

Bjorn and all other YouTubers not one of them checked out bench width. Only leg room and seat height and roof height.

Maybe need to find a real car reviewer but so far no luck. Been looking for a while now.

Has anyone come across any decent reviews/reports of the standard-range Y? Those I've found relate to the short-lived US version, but I understand Tesla has released a new standard-range version for HK (which I assume would be similar/the same as what we'll get here?).

Yeah only in HK and I've not seen much reviews from there. China has SR cars too but again finding a review wont be easy.

fwiw I find the 3 rides fine on the 18s its firm but not crashy, have to see what the Y is like. Remember Tomaz had just got out of a higher end Mercedes.

Literally just finished watching this video of the HK version of the standard range Y, and that guy also reports harsh suspension (noting the great auto translation!):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJtxJX5QJZw

The Y also comes with 19s as standard, and 20s as an option  (vs the 18/19 variants of the 3) - cost-aside, I'd stick with the 19s for (dis)comfort reasons alone. (the 19s on my car - a Mazda6 wagon - do make it fairly crunchy, so I have some idea of what I may be in for...)

It'll be interesting to see how close they do make the cost of the SR Y to the $80k limit, as options will quickly tip it over - I'd want it in red, but I see that's a $3,300 option on the 3! Even blue is an additional $1,700, but that's a necessity as I'd never buy a white car...

Right, time to stop obsessing and be patient for any announcement; do you think they'll take deposits for a later delivery, or launch it as available from that date?

IMO the SR will be $76,900 + orc  there might be room in there for some paint, the 'free' colour will likely change soon -car has to be below 80k on the invoice inc orc.

They'll open orders soon and $200 will get you a reservation, delivery wont be until later I think (December, February?)

I’m going to order one when able. Happy with new model 3 but worth a punt looking at the Y. Cancelling order is not a big issue and selling either car will be dead easy.

Let's hope the standard colour changes as if you're right on the price, and assuming ORCs are the same as for the 3, there's not enough fat to even cover the mid-cost colours:

$80,000 threshold - ($76,900 car + $1832 ORCs) = $1268.

I'll still hang onto hope that either it'll come in a more interesting 'standard colour' and/or they price things to ensure the mid-range colour cost is below $80k.

BTW, is there a breakdown somewhere of those ORCs? (I've calculated that $1832 as the difference between the car price figure quoted at the top of the page and the total cost at the bottom, without deviating from the default offerings.)

If you pick it up in auckland will the delivery fee be waved ?

Must admit taking a week off work and driving the length of the country in a new tesla would appeal especially if the delivery fee is cancelled out...

Don't think I'll be visiting Shangai to pick it up if I buy one, but similarly I'd be tempted to go to Akld to pick it up - does this 'delivery fee' include the cost of getting it anywhere in NZ, or is it just to cover getting it to NZ? (And in-country delivery is on top?)

If it's an unavoidable cost, that's crap pricing - if there's no ability to avoid or reduce a particular charge it really should be included in the base cost. Even dodgier than Tesla's 'After estimated savings' figure on the ordering site...

It covers getting it to anywhere in NZ. I'm pretty sure the advertised price includes the delivery fee.

Thanks, that's good to know it includes local delivery.

This charge is not included in the initial cost the site shows for the car, but is part of those ORCs that add up to the $1832 figure, as per Rob's breakdown above. My point is that if this is still charged at the same rate, whether the car is dropped off to an address in Gore or the buyer picks it up from the Auckland depot, it should be included in the initial car cost, especially as it's a cost set by Tesla (unlike, say, registration).

That said, Tesla is far from the only company engaged in questionable pricing. It's just that in this case those added charges are likely going to make it difficult to order anything but the default if trying to keep the total purchase price under $80k. I'll be stretching it to justify a car costing $72k, let alone over $80k!
