I called Tesla. They suggested testing it with a Tesla car. I'll do that. But I did point out this device is now supposed to work with any EV....and it has actually worked twice. They also suggest I test it with a few other Type 2 compatible EVs. If it works....then it's something about the MG. If it doesn't work....It's something about the Wall Connector. They would like to know...as there are other non-Tesla owners buying this device because the price is reasonable they plan to buy a Tesla at some point soon. Be ready....but want it work with their existing EV.

I was curious about how this would go and that was one of the reasons I ordered it. I'm being rewarded with an interesting problem. :-)

What version is it running? They recently added a new feature to the Gen 3 that gives you 3 access options: All Vehicles, Tesla Only, Authorised Teslas Only. If you have this version, you'd want to make sure it's on the first option. If you're not on this version (21.36.4), you can download it manually here

Some gen 2 WC can and some can't. The older ones can. There is a dip switch inside that enables / disables 'legacy' mode. The latter gen WC ignored the dip switch. I have one of those. I got mine in November 2019. Definitely only charges Tesla cars. This is why I wanted to replace it.

I happened to drive past an MG5 EV station wagon earlier today - It's ok looking in the flesh; fairly generic and un-original (I see elements of earlier Passat wagons).

While I understood they weren't yet being brought in by the NZ agents, I hadn't realised until now that some firms are already importing them (not sure if the one I saw was an early sample of the legit product or 'parallel imported'). It'll be interesting to see what they retail for once officially arrived, especially given they'll be able to access the full rebate (not the reduced $3450 for second hand imported cars, like the one in that link).

That looks OK. We are currently looking for an EV as a second vehicle.

Yeah theres a few been imported.

They are not particularly inspiring other than well priced and decently capable, exactly what that part of the EV market needs.

Not sure I would be paying new car money(ish) for a car without actual manufacturers support tho

Well, the MG5 estate certainly makes sense if you're looking for space; it's even not too slow (0-100 7.7 sec I think) and has a decent range, but every review I've read makes it clear it's about as exciting on the handling front as it is in the looks department. While I'd love to be able to stick to a wagon when I change to an EV, I'm not willing to completely compromise on how the car drives. Good second car, perhaps, as per your needs.

That said, if you don't need the boot, then the Model 3 is an additional $7,567 after rebate...

Reminds me of an interview I heard a couple of weeks back on RNZ re other options in the charging space:

A Canterbury-based EV technology which circumvents the peak 6 o'clock charging surge has just received a funding boost. Christchurch startup Evnex is bridging the gap between the electric car owner and the electricity industry.

The team at Evnex has developed and is now installing a fast at-home re-charge unit, which sets timings for when electricity is plentiful and cheap.

Evnex has recently raised $2.7 million in a seed round led by technology investor Movac and Sir Stephen Tindall.

Kathryn is joined by Evnex founder and chief executive Ed Harvey.

For the Motorsport fans, Hayden Paddon ran his Hyundai Kona EV Rally Car at the Waimate 50 Hill climb over the weekend.

The noise it makes from the outside, is the first prototype of a noise generator that they've trialed. I kind of liked it when i first heard it on Saturday, sounds like a large, angry Mosquito.

I also heard Hayden speaking with Lloyd Burr on Magic Talk on Thursday afternoon, and Hayden said that even though the new car is an EV, he said it was noisier inside the EV as opposed to a conventional rally car, this down to the EV having 2 gearboxes (twice the noise?)
