Because the government has never got around to fixing the differences between diesels for commercial use, and diesels for private car use. Is there some ACC or other charges on the petrol, that isn't charged on the diesel? I have got rid of my diesel for this very reason, no point in owning one unless you do big mileage these days IMO.

I think I recall hearing sometime ago that the Road User Charges and higher rego for diesels are there instead of the "road tax" component in petrol, hence why diesel fuel is so much cheaper per litre. The rationale for this being that farmers (and other diesel vehicle owners ) whose vehicles don't use public roads don't have to pay for something they don't use.

There is an easy Calculator here for Diesel vs Petrol.
If you travel over 10,000 kms a year - and have a new CRDi Turbo diesel's that are very economical - you are better off having a diesel over the time.

Plus - the advantages of having the power / torque.

Downsides are Diesel models are expensive to purchase and service than Petrol equivalents.

Thanks, that makes me feel so much better to know I'm possibly foolish but not weird!

It's certainly not me but something strange with the browser here at my workplace (clearly not only that it's IE 11, going by the another post). Compared to the screenshots posted above, the last text on the right-hand side that I can see relates to CO emissions (ie, the only bit missing is that relating to the licencing fee).

kiwiharry: 2002 Toyota Caldina GT

$138.04 for 12 months, or $134.95 if paid online.

Just checked online and my Vanguard is coming up as $134.95 so a few dollars difference for manual processing.

All I can say is wow, there is sure some difference between models. It's going to another factor when buying a car I'm sure.

is their anywhere that explains how they come to set the fees. In my case i have a 2003 toyota ipsum . now if i look that model up i find 2 different fees for what seems the same car , and the only difference seems to be that mine is an import and is $134 a year , and the other one is $175 a year, identical cars from what i can see but 2 widely different fees.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

muppet: Our rego expires 6 days before the new date/pricing. We even got a little brochure with the rego reminder to say "Hey, you might want to only renew for a short period because the price is going down after the 1st"

I paid the full amount for another year, just to annoy everyone.

um, congratulations?

The thing is that Diesel isn't that much cheaper than petrol these days. It did used to be, but for some reason it isn't as much these days.

What I found really interesting about these new registration pricing, is that the japanese import version of some models is higher than the NZ new model, for what is largely the same model, although there must be some variations that make a difference. It does appear that the jap import model ion some cases can have a lower safety rating. I knew there was another good reason to buy a car with all the safety bells a whistles. They should give extra points for things like slow speed collision control, lane departure warnings etc,

okay found out why the differences , all to do with how many serious crashes you model has had.

But does that seem fair....

My 2003 model car, has been on the road hell of a lot longer than a 2008 version, so obviously mines got a better chance of having more recorded crashes against it than a vehicle that hasnt been around as much. And do they count crashes that your vehicle was not at fault for ?

It is not the age or value of vehicles, but their design and manufacture that influence the injury outcomes, however it is acknowledged that newer vehicles have benefitted from advances in safety engineering and systems.

Any data relating to other factors that may have influenced the road crash and are not purely related to vehicle safety were excluded. These include such things as speed, age, weather, driver skill and alcohol use

One of the key differences between many imports and their NZ new equivalents in the past had been the number of airbags. I recall many imports would only have two compared with six - first generation Mazda 6s were like this. Unsure if this is still the case? But this could partially explain that reason why some Japanese imports having a higher registration cost.

Yeah, apt username there... I'd say the only one who looks a bit weird in this tale is you for deliberately choosing to spend more solely for the purpose of being contrary!
