Because the government has never got around to fixing the differences between diesels for commercial use, and diesels for private car use. Is there some ACC or other charges on the petrol, that isn't charged on the diesel? I have got rid of my diesel for this very reason, no point in owning one unless you do big mileage these days IMO.
I think I recall hearing sometime ago that the Road User Charges and higher rego for diesels are there instead of the "road tax" component in petrol, hence why diesel fuel is so much cheaper per litre. The rationale for this being that farmers (and other diesel vehicle owners ) whose vehicles don't use public roads don't have to pay for something they don't use.
joker97: That's so weird. For a moment i thought you were a bit weird. But then i remembered that browsers sometimes make people look foolish

$138.04 for 12 months, or $134.95 if paid online.
Common sense is not as common as you think.
muppet: Our rego expires 6 days before the new date/pricing. We even got a little brochure with the rego reminder to say "Hey, you might want to only renew for a short period because the price is going down after the 1st"
I paid the full amount for another year, just to annoy everyone.

There is an easy Calculator here for Diesel vs Petrol.
If you travel over 10,000 kms a year - and have a new CRDi Turbo diesel's that are very economical - you are better off having a diesel over the time.
Plus - the advantages of having the power / torque.
Downsides are Diesel models are expensive to purchase and service than Petrol equivalents.

It is not the age or value of vehicles, but their design and manufacture that influence the injury outcomes, however it is acknowledged that newer vehicles have benefitted from advances in safety engineering and systems.
Any data relating to other factors that may have influenced the road crash and are not purely related to vehicle safety were excluded. These include such things as speed, age, weather, driver skill and alcohol use

mattwnz: What I found really interesting about these new registration pricing, is that the japanese import version of some models is higher than the NZ new model, for what is largely the same model, although there must be some variations that make a difference. It does appear that the jap import model ion some cases can have a lower safety rating. I knew there was another good reason to buy a car with all the safety bells a whistles. They should give extra points for things like slow speed collision control, lane departure warnings etc,
