Perhaps there's Hydrogen in the future of his contracting firm? He hasn't come out of nowhere, and neither has his $150k.

The main problem with hydrogen in South Korea and Norway (and I assume Cali too) is that hydrogen is both expensive to make and buy but lacks anywhere near the kinds of profit you need to make a filling station a valid economic proposition, even if fully utilised.

 

And there is little scope to fix that because of the energy needed to make it, and the economics of selling it.

 

 

 

If we had reasonable carbon costs for fossil fuels and you hade efficient h2 generation from renewable it still would not be close to competing with straight battery cars.

 

 

 

Yes sure they have bigger batteries but our most popular EV doesnt use cobalt, just uses iron, phosphate and lithium, all are plentiful elements. Unlike a fuel cell.

His council Bio claims.... the following...... His car purchasing experience might indicate otherwise...

 

But as others have said, he is a well established business owner.. dropping 150K on a H2 Car is not going to bust his bank, and may indicate where his business is heading.....

I thought only the base Model 3 was LFP (and even that change is very recent), the others are still ACN. Pretty sure our neighbours have one of each.

Yep only the base model, which is like 80% of the sales of model 3 or something. Even the others use very limited amounts of cobalt. 

 

 

 

We should start to see other LFP pack cars here soon

Waitomo have a few hydrogen refuelling stations around the North island.
I'm sure if he speaks nicely to them, they will fast track a Christchurch installation. 

 

And if he has that much excess cash, maybe he should buy one of these Xcient Fuel Cell Hydrogen Truck | Hyundai New Zealand

King Country-based Waitomo Group, New Zealand's fastest-growing independent fuel retailer, has lodged resource consent applications to build a hydrogen fuelling station in Hamilton and another in Palmerston North but it is yet to apply for any in the South Island.

 

Waitomo managing director Jimmy Ormsby​ said the company would be expanding its hydrogen fuelling stations down to the South Island but certainly not within the next 12 months.

 

He expected the North Island stations to be commissioned sometime in the third quarter of 2022.

 

Waitomo has three petrol stations in Christchurch and Ormsby said the Ferry Rd site was probably the only one with enough room for a hydrogen station.

Theses are available in NZ , one is featured fuelling an AT bus,

From watching the Video they connect to a bank of commercial H2 Cylinders (widely available in NZ) and compress and deliver the H2 at either 350 or 700 bar vie the required outlet. 

 

I suspect Hyundai have at least one (they have been touring the country with their NEXOs) 

 

-So the article is more a spruiking piece to raise the profile of H2 and lack of H2 infra ( particularly in the SI)

No Nexo imported since September 2019 (just the 2 then), this one was registered 15th November, so is this one of the 2019 cars only now registered for road use?

I'm going to guess that you do *not* want to pay what BOC will charge per kilo of hydrogen, plus the rental costs of the tanks, plus ownership/rental/servicing and energy for the compressor.
