I think back when the leaf launched EVs looking different was a good thing, got attention showed that there actual real evs on the roads. now? no real need.

The Toyota/subaru thing is just because they make ugly cars. You know you are not buying them for looks, just what they do and do reliably.

I'm not sure that will be enough with the Chinese cars coming in.

Not particularly helpful when the dealers don't want to know about your UK or Japanese warranties when you import a car, that needs to change. given they're the same company and all.

Not everyone can afford the premium of buying a brand new car in NZ.

I've seen the other side of this. My friend is a the distributor for a product (not cars) and he spends so much time dealing with warranty repairs for version that have been bought from overseas. So much so that the manufacturer has changed stance and asked those customers to send them back to where they purchased them from.

I guess the difference is (and he has to charge more) is he pulls each one apart to measure and re-assemble and the overseas ones have been sitting on a shelf for a year or two.

I'm not sure. If the Leaf example given about it's range degrading so much that it's almost useless as a car, that was the point I was making. Is that a ten or twenty year old ICE vehicle is probably providing 95% of it's original performance.

I think it'll take a long, long time for a Leaf (or any other EV with significant battery degradation) to be 'almost useless' - that member is needing their car for commuting a relatively decent distance on the open road, so it's understandable they need something with acceptable range. Give that same car to someone who uses their car exclusively for short urban trips and it's ideal. My wife's Leaf is down from about 155km range to 110km or so - I imagine it'll still be useful for us (or someone else using it in a similar way) when it's got half that range.

it depends on where you live. in hilly places at 40ks, it uses > 10km per km driven. at 100kph it uses > 20km per km driven.

That's essentially my point - for every car that is no longer fit for purpose for one person, it'll be useful for someone else, whether that's in the same location or not: when your car no longer does it for you in Dunedin, someone up the road in Chch will find it perfectly adequate. (Of course, the issue is one may be needing to swap vehicles earlier than if it had been an ICE without this issue.)

I'm in PN, and it's perfect for crap-range EVs - most things are no longer than 15 minutes drive away so distance travelled on a normal day for most will be pretty low; it's dang flat; and the blocks are so short and intersection controls so poorly designed the inevitable stopping at every single @#$# intersection makes good use of regen!

(I don't think there's any particularly accurate calculation for determining the impact of hills or speed on the claimed range in Leafs: the GOM is not only notoriously unreliable, it is also strongly influenced by previous driving - so it's highly dependent on how a specific car has been driven over the last while. Generalisations may be possible for a particular car that is driven in a similar way/location, but much more than that is pretty sus I think.)

found himself with 0% SoC at a defective ChargePoint charger just outside of Allenspark, Colorado. Fortunately for Drew, our own Kyle Conner was in the area driving a 2022 BMW X5 45e PHEV, so he jumped to the Model 3’s rescue.

Yes, if that happened to me I'd either find somewhere to plug into a power point really close to the defective charger, suck it up and wait for a few hours or call roadside assistance for a flat-bed tow truck. That's why you pay for a roadside assistance service.

I must be getting old: these "Oh look, I 'accidentally' did an obviously dumb thing while I just happened to be filming it all so I could make a YouTube video of myself making exaggerated faces of me being shocked at the consequences of the dumb thing I did!" videos just make me think "How did someone this stupid end up with enough spare time and money to do all these stupid things on video?"

Yeah what ever...

If only I'd recorded the time I nearly ran out of petrol in Havelock at 9pm heading to Nelson because I was an idiot and underestimated consumption and didn't fill up in Picton. I could make a video about why you should not buy very small Japanese cars.

In the end, went to local policeman's house and he gave me 5 litres from his lawn mower.

RobDickinson:

FSD yes has taken longer than said, because its complex, no one else is doing any better  (mostly a lot worse). Doing complex things for the first time often takes longer.

...

Elon has always set challenging timelines because thats how you get shit done, unlike some other companies who are setting guidance for 2030 or 2035 etc

I mean sure - Tesla appear to be doing better than others, depending on what you look at and how you measure it, but it still meets the literal dictionary definition of arrogant that you yourself posted.

I don't think Elon is simply setting a challenging timeline. You can do that without continually setting and missing arbitrary dates like the doomsday cult people do for the second coming/end of the world. I think he's deliberately lying about Tesla's capability - either that or he is actually clueless (unlikely), or it's just plain arrogance.

He referred to FSD as a "solved problem", clearly it's not a solved problem. Of course it's complex, but Elon is smart enough to know it's complex which begs the question why does he refer to it as a "solved problem"?

While it doesn't give him a hall pass, it is worthwhile remembering that Elon has Asperger's syndrome, so his judgement when interacting with the public is not always the correct way. Ideally, he should probably let a proper PR team handle that but...🤷🏻‍♂️
