RobDickinson:

why are you on a thread about a 4 door saloon wanting to replace a v8 SUV?

Because I love cars and technology - and I would love to have an electric vehicle when it makes sense. Someone on the thread asked what sort of range someone needed and I piped up with my specific situation... However it appears that having odd requirements is offensive to some so I deeply regret it.

I've learnt much about the Model 3 through the personal experiences of people here and the links posted... However probably the biggest thing I have learnt is that some Model 3 owners seem to think everyone should be getting electric cars now and forget that they are in a position to buy a $76-$120k vehicle... VERY few people in NZ are in that position and the 'affordable' EV (The Leaf) is massively range constrained.

I'm not sure anyone thinks that.

There isnt an EV for every use right now, let alone an affordable one.

The model 3 isnt expensive for its class, but the cheapest NZ new EV is $50k hardly low end even with fuel savings.

2021 should see a potential $8k gov discount and many more options.

You're being a bit dramatic.

Not every car is going to fit the needs of someones outlier needs. Towing 500km non-stop is indeed outside of the capabilities of the Model 3...however it's unlikely you'd be buying a sedan for that task anyway so the Model 3 was never going to be an option for you. I don't think you'd be able to find any sedan that can go 500km non-stop.

It's also not a revelation that the Model 3 is outside the budget of most people in NZ, but this topic isn't about an EV for every budget. A new BMW 3 series isn't in the budget for most in NZ either but eventually they get to the used car market and you see "every day" New Zealanders driving them.

185kwh rivian or tri motor cybertruck will likely tow your boat 500km,  so wait for one of those.

I generally agree, but the theme in these EV threads is often evangelistic. Its not the right time to buy an EV, nor do many want to trade down their modern ICE for an old Leaf just because the old dented Leaf is an EV. And you can get a very cool car if you pay the EV premium but still buy an ICE.

For those that choose to buy now its no different to a golf nut buying a 5k set of clubs (well I hope 4k max actually) or a cycle nut buying a 3kg $7k cycle etc etc. Enjoy. But don't preach.

The subsidy is quite small, but thats fine, but the RUC will reduce fuel savings markedly. Bottom line is, if an EV is within ballpark of its ICE equivalent it would sell like hotcakes. We are not there. From what I gather earlier in these threads, the pre owned but quite new market probably is a while away as well

Not buying an EV today could see you loose out a lot more in the future. leafs have been holding their values very well and IMO are not a bad all round car, decent interior and drive fine.

RUC will add some costs but it will still be significantly cheaper than driving a diesel or petrol. With the added benefit of not poisoning people, funding the middle east etc...

It would be about half the cost of petrol. I guess thats significant, but it isnt really, not when the premium is so high.

I meant to comment on affordability. Yes, it may be too much for many to buy new, but with the Kona example, why would you pay 80k for a car that is a 40k Kona ICE but it has an EV engine?? Is that engine worth $40,000???  Thats a lot of petrol. Conclusion is its throwing cash away, may as well get an 80k ICE.

As I said if they were in the ballpark they would sell like hotcakes so you can assess the benefits of reduced emissions. But at the current prices, it will do little do reduce emissions. Thats well up the bell curve. Remember that of the total emissions, not a great deal is from the urban school dropper offers and shoppers. Whic is the EV market according to here

And no, I dont want a Leaf, new or old

How so? If more models are out, more choice, better price, bedded in more technologically, whats not to like? I dont like the Leaf or the Tesla. Kona too small and plain. Not much to look at so far, for others their cool EV is right there

This is a thread about a specific Electric Vehicle. Would you go to a thread about the BMW 3 Series and harp on about how the 3 Series is out of the buying capability of most New Zealanders?

If you read the replies you'll see that's not the case.

It is the case if you wish to scroll a few pages. Myself, Rob, Neil. Steve just missed out with a late mention of the model.

So, no need to make things up so you can pick on who suits

Just a FYI: To get things back on topic I will be deleting any new posts that is not directly related to Tesla.

If you want to continue discussing EVs, EVs vs ICE in general etc, please do that in the EV (electric vehicle) general news thread.

Doug Demuro has done his top car of 2019 award and the Model 3 performance came out on top. This link should take you to the point of the video with it, but if not jump to 20:42 if you don't want to watch the other award categories
