If the OEM with software is $2250 and the 3rd party is $1200 I think I would go the OEM route - depending on what the software does. It is an extra $1k on a $50k car I could live with that. But I would be towing trailers a bit. If it was mostly for a bike rack I wouldn't bother.

I have an OEM towbar and tow module on my Touareg and am glad I do. The build quality of the bar is superb and perfectly matched to the chassis. The module does smart things such as disabling the rear parking sensors when the trailer is connected, and tells me if there's a problem with the lights on the trailer. Supposedly it does other mystery vehicle management stuff but not sure exactly what - possibly alters the braking or transmission parameters?

Trailer mode in a Tesla adjusts the auto emergency brakes to take into account the extra braking distance, turns off the rear parking sensors, disables auto-steer (TACC is still available, with greater following distances) and trailer sway detection/correction.

Model Y Juniper “Launch Edition” now available to order in NZ for an estimated May delivery.

RWD approx $75K.

AWD LR approx $85K.

New blue colour and the return of the indicator stalk!

For the launch edition there doesn’t seem to be a paint colour premium.

The AWD also comes with the acceleration boost as part of the Launch Edition.

If they have listened to customers and retained the indicator stalk, I wonder if there will be a change to the Model 3 as well. Parts commonality between the two models is a major cost saving, but they seem to be diverging in things like the lights (front and rear), so maybe not for the steering wheel assembly either.

Edit: Also interesting times with the launch of the BYD Sealion 7 due next month.

I would be surprised if the next update for the 3 doesn't also include the return of the stalk. I'd also be surprised if they didn't offer a retrofit for those with 2024 cars, like they did for the S & X when they brought back the round wheel for those that didn't want the yoke

The new stalk in the refreshed Model Y seems a bit iffy. It doesn't seem to have the three-flash sequence with a light push of the stalk.

Here is a review that Teslabjorn just did of a pre-production Model Y Long Range:
