Small battery van is $50k, claim the $7500 gst back, claim the $8625 rebate, not buy diesel or ruc for 3 years, have great resale value,  feel like a smug git, priceless.

I guess if they are cheeky enough, when they rock up to do the job they’ll say “Mate, do you mind if I plug my van in while I’m here?”.

Yeah sure why not, and by the way, while you're here do you mind if I borrow a brush and some paint to touch up the fence?

Businesses generally don't last long when they obsess over cashflow at the expense of capex viability.

So funny thing dealing with my Kia Niro incase anyone else has noticed it. Nav and Maps will freeze on SH1 with a certain zoom level which kicks in automatically on sparse sections of the road. This is due to an issue with label text and a FW update is available

yeah compare a new van to a knackered old one sure clever.

Always wondered what triggers people' assumptions which has nothing to do with the words being said.
Reminds me, when at numerous corporate meetings during 35+ years in corporate Telco environment after something unambiguous being said, there will always be that wannabe manager who'd say: "what he/she really meant is..." followed by their own interpretation having nothing to do with the speaker' words.
P.S.
Initial remark was about the expected potential rise in the end-user prices because of the cost to the small business of the brand new EV and nothing about the comparison of the new vs old car.
Besides both tradies do not own their own houses (fact) but renting, hence there is absolutely no way they would waste 59+$k on the new EV instead of saving up for their dream family home.

I take your point but I guess it's because there are at least as many driving around in $80K utes as there are in $2000 beaters.

Depends on the observer' location, and time of the day e.g.:
You go to Vector Greenlane Charger and you see couple of Tesla (BMW, Ioniq, Leaf) charging and heaps of cheap old Vans nearby owned by fresh flowers merchants. Have not seen any branded Tesla. Few branded Inoniq EV.
You go to Piha and there are heaps of new expensive Utes (some branded) parked near the surf spots and zero EVs around. An odd Leaf would be charging near Piha cafe, but mostly that charger will be idling. Have never seen any surfer yet arriving at Piha in EV.
Stand for a few minutes in Greenlane during lunch time and many various EVs will pass by, new and old.
During peak morning hours in Greenlane you'll notice a lot of old branded Diesel Vans - electricians, plumbers, security installers, painters, locksmiths, pet groomers, fence specialists, weather tightness guys, courier deliverers etc. You'd see much less expensive Utes (branded or not) at that time of the day.
The disability vehicles specialists in Grenlane (they are the biggest in Auckland) do not import EV vans.
Those are just observations, situation is changing with the introduction of more options by car manufacturers and with incentive in the form of rebate.

Technical question. Many EVs have rear wheel motors and other electrical gubbins at the rear of the vehicle. Would this affect the installation of a towbar and or wheelchair carrier?

Not sure about a wheelchair carrier but it hasn't caused any problems for towbars

The wheelchair like bikes puts a bigger vertical force on the bar and on out Rav4 they need to put some more beef in attachment points

Your RAV4 Hybrid has a rear electric motor and can be fitted with a towbar. Any vehicle with a tow rating should have been assessed. I’m not sure how a wheelchair carrier attaches, if it mounts to a towbar tongue, as long as it doesn’t exceed the download limit, I don’t see it being excluded.

In your circumstance, ask the question, get an official answer in writing.

I recall my Dad (motor engineer) telling me that tow bars are for towing i.e horizontal drag and most manufacturers specify a vertical load limit or words to that effect. He passed away many years back so I am dragging this from the depths of my memory that is in need of defragging. It makes sense though.

It is just one more thing to think about when assessing an EV or any car I guess. I just don't want to make an expensive mistake or not be able to load the chair externally on a vehicle. @Dingbatt your suggestion makes absolute sense, thanks heaps
