Sheez, talk about conspiracy theorists! Or, was that said with a touch of sarcasm.

I've just looked at his video list. The guy is a comedian that takes the piss out of everything, but as with a lot of comedy, there is always an underlying grain of truth.

Let's face it, at $110,000 for an Model 3 in NZ (and it only goes up from there), you are never going to buy one for ecological reasons only. It's like any other car over $100k, they are only bought to show off with. And yes, I fully support electric vehicles, but Tesla prices hardly make it a car of the people.

Nokia 6110, 6210, 6234, Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1, Huawei Ideos X5 (Windows Mobile), Samsung Galaxy SIII, LG G4, OnePlus 5, iPhone Xs Max (briefly), S21 Ultra. And I thought I hadn't had many phones - but the first one around 1997.

mkay if you are going to talk about FUD then you could stop spreading it yourself, the model 3 starts at $77k and there isnt a base version even at $110k, you have to add options to the performance model to get it that high.

Its also still $50k cheaper than the next cheapest AWD EV and $55k cheaper than the BMW M3 and $35k cheaper than the Alfa.

To be honest many people do buy them for ecological reasons, its the financial reasons that won't stack up...

I did, most (not all) of the people I know who bought did for eco reasons also, but not all.

What gets me is when people can afford this level of car and still choose the v8 diesel SQ7 or something instead

That doesn't really surprise me at all , They will usually still live in a big house that require lots of heating/cooling and is filled with lots of "stuff" , They will also often have many overseas vacations.

To ne honest, when people attempt to be virtuous they often take the easiest path, for those with plenty of money an EV is a 'relatively' easy step to take, whether it creates more change in the other parts of their lifestyle is often a 'work in progress'.

it is a relatively easy step for people with enough money, its also quite a significant step (along with reducing air miles).

We stretched ourselves for the tesla because we felt it would last and was worth it, with little coming in the next few years that could compete at all with them

On that we agree. The only advantage the ICE will have is in towing. Tesla have it as an option for Model 3 in Europe, but the loading is such that it is only good for putting a bike rack on. Cybertruck anyone?

Yes strictly speaking you are correct, but only to order. I was referring to the fact that the available ones in NZ (long range/performance on Tesla NZ site) are $110k, and other models (S, X) only go up from there. I should have been clearer. Whatever, they are NOT cheap by any stretch of the imagination.

I've actually found some interesting stats which just go to show there are a lot of people around in NZ with a lot of spare dosh.

New vehicle sales NZ 2019

Total EV (not including hybrid): 1881

Tesla Model 3: 657

Tesla Model S: 56

Tesla Model X: 89

Therefore Tesla % is 43%!

People have been saving and waiting years for the model 3 though - I know I did.

The base SR+ at $77k is a fair bargain compared to the Kona and eNiro

BMW sell 1800+ a year etc, check the non EV car sales.

and those $110k model 3's are quite possibly still on the ship too rather than in stock.

Those stats only cover new cars, if you go to NZTA, they have monthly stats that show both new and used EV registrations,

in 2019, there were 3290 used leafs added to the NZ electric fleet, which is 4 times the total number of Teslas...

most EVs in NZ are used, indicating that price is a significant factor...

Meanwhile there are more than 260,000 EVs on the road in Norway, out of those about 50,000 are Teslas. So about 19% of the total EVs.

But the ICE-defenders of course typically talk about Teslas and how the rich get the benefit of the tax free status of EVs in Norway.

The Standard Range+ is available in NZ and starts at $78k. The Long Range starts at $98k.

No, they're not cheap cars but the Model 3 is designed to be a competitor to the BMW 3 series so when you compare it to that, it's cheaper for much better performance.
