What I found more interesting in the article is that the majority of the vehicles were going to European markets. It smacks of a compliance vehicle more than a serious attempt to evolve its fleet.

I can't remember where, but I read somewhere earlier this week where a survey reports that globally something like >50% of people want their next car to be an EV, but in Japan, it's about 4%. In that context it is not really a surprise that most of the Toyota ones are bound for Europe. But also, Toyota is at least partly to blame for the attitude. They still have it themselves.

Yeah, I heard this on the radio this week; I recall Japan was fairly high in relation to all ‘EVs’ (incl hybrids and PHEVs) but the lowest in relation to BEVs.

I’ve managed to find the report:

I assume the “hub bolt” that has caused the recall is not solely something an EV has. Just an automotive part that has been incorrectly engineered in this case.

While true, the claim has often been that Toyota is the best at making vehicles and doesn't have quality issues.

Japan govt set 2035 all new cars will be clean energy vehicles. US$7200 subsidy. Tokyo local government set 2030. It has to happen or they will find markets for secondhand vehicles limited.

They incorrectly engineered the part for an EV, so their much vaunted experience in building crs (which really doesnt exist, they couldnt figure out fuel pumps a couple years ago) is pure crap.

Its absolutely a compliance car to lessen the effect of the Eu co2 fines etc, Toyota will build the bare minimum evs they possibly can, and make them as poor as they think they can get away with

Here's the charging curve for the bZ4x

For the same price you can get a Kia EV6 with the following charge curve:

Overall, pretty terrible for a 2023 EV.

I don't agree with you.

While they have been dragging their feet and have still to prove their commitment, they have announced that they will be delivering 30 BEVs by 2030.

They have created their pure-electric platform which isn't cheap, so I would expect them to make more than 1 car and that it is more than just an exercise in pleasing regulators. If they weren't really serious they could have done that by electrifying their ICE platform.

“Clean energy” includes regular hybrids.. Toyota threatened to throw its toys...

“The final version of the document, available online, refers to Japan's 2035 target of all new domestic car sales being "so-called electric-powered vehicles," and specifically mentions in the main text that such vehicles include hybrids.”

Just saw the following video on the BYD Atto 3 and it looks very interesting.

https://youtu.be/UvzRfUGAB_s

Rotating screen is nice and they will be providing Apple CarPlay and Android Auto later this year.

Didn't know it was being assembled in Australia which is I presume is where our ones will come from.

For those with longer memories we used to assemble cars in NZ from CKD (completely knocked down) parts. One such assembly plant was in Porirua I think, now the site of a Bunnings.  But we need people who know how to assemble parts properly and not just install random tech. From what I have fit and finish are one of the areas where Tesla's don't quite meet people's expectations of a car's finish.
