It's very easy in retrospect for armchair critics to second guess the decisions of the race officials.  Especially with the benefit of hindsight and in the context of a serious incident having occurred.

To play devil's advocate for a moment, consider the following:
 1) The vast majority of drivers successfully navigated the track without incident.
 2) Waved yellow flags were displayed as per the regulations.  Drivers will have had to display a reduced speed through the effected sector.
 3) Despite some of the hysteria from some quarters about the race needing to be abandoned because it was too wet - none of the drivers (besides Vettel) had pitted to exchange their Intermediate Tyres for Extreme Wets.
 4) An increased risk exists whenever a recovery vehicle is operating.  Irrespective of weather conditions.

My personal opinion in this case is that there may be some questions to answer regarding the light levels, but fundamentally this was an extremely unfortunate accident rather than any form of negligence or recklessness.

(Remember when Eddie Irvine lambasted the race officials at Silverstone for stopping the race for 40min to repair barriers because, "I guarantee nobody will ever crash in that same spot!".   Sometimes lightning does strike the same place twice...)

Thoughts and prayers go out to Jules and his friends and family.

i thought someone on twitter quoted Sutil as saying the car went "under" the tractor - the pic suggests it didn't go UNDER the tractor

Yep, something must have gone wrong to make Jules leave the track at speed. There has to be a large enquiry, as initially it has to be seen as a safety issue that was not met, we need to know why.  Problem is the Jules crash had no TV coverage. AFAIK there were the normal precautions taken

you don't need to have something wrong to leave the track at speed.

On the basis that everyone else got round that bend ok.

he misjudged the available friction ie driver error. i thought by something wrong you meant like a mechanical or electronic fault

Considering the worsening conditions it appears he would've aquaplaned just like Sutil did

joker97:F1 = Bernie.
No end to F1, not by a death of a driver anyway.

Lol, sorry I was meaning end of F1 at Suzuka. I'm sure there are other Japanese tracks with better safety.

That makes sense. I hope there are witnesses so that the true reason will be found.

the telemetry data will have revealed everything already, in real time. those gigabytes of data can probably tell how many times they farted.

That's the going theory, with all the talk of darkness and standing water, but ultimately a mistake an inexperienced driver.

A wise man who'd just quit the sport might have probably said that's why you don't put a boy in a f1 car.

Nonetheless these do not make it any better. I hope for everyone's sake somehow he is ok. And his family.

By all accounts it was getting very dark and the conditions were worsening.
The race start was delayed due to poor weather, with the first 9 or so laps being a slow procession under safety car, all of which eats into the running time.
One thing that I hope does come out of this is a rethink on running evening races so close to sundown, with no backup provision for lighting.
It would be interesting to see how close it was, presumably in the minutes region, to being called off due to low lighting level conditions.

I don't know that experience alone was the leading factor.
It wasn't just this driver, given only a few laps earlier Sutil did the same thing, and he's been in F1 since 2007.

umm ... doubt it ... you mean no more monaco, silverstone, spa etc?

i think as long as honda (who owns suzuka) pays Bernie the $100 million he demands it will carry on

Yeah, and Vettel went off and bounced along the gravel runoff a corner or two before where Sutil and Bianchi went off. There's no way you could put getting caught out by aquaplaning down to (lack of) F1 experience
