Longest haul was 350kms, I didn't have to stop for work. But I stop for breaks every ninety minutes, coffee, stretch, pee etc. I understand the hotels, but at this stage they are few and far between. And I imagine they won't provide that service for free for long. As for plenty of the motels, I can't see myself draping an extension cord out the window each night. In theory I could stop at fast chargers, as my work isn't appointment based. But it would be frustrating to need to charge in Cambridge for example and to arrive just after people started charging. What may have been a thirty minute stop might turn into an hour. And that's where it's difficult for me. Day one is 550 kms actually.

The long range EVs can do around 450-660km on a full charge these days. Assuming you were to get one of these longer range EVs you would likely only need to stop at a fast charger once per day which can easily be timed with meal break and adding no extra time to your stop. The Hotel charging network is quite expansive if you get a Tesla - most cities and destinations now have at least one hotel with a Level 2 charger available. No, I don't expect them to be free and some already add a fee to the stay but it's still much less than fuel.

I have owned an EV for 3+ years now and regularly travel up and down the North Island. The ChargeNet collection of chargers has steadily increased over this time and it has only been twice in the 3+ years that I have ever had to wait for a charger.

Out of interest, do you ever have problem with anti-social drivers using EV charging bays to 'park' regular vehicles? If so, does ChargeNet have any enforcement regime in place to manage this problem?

Once in Waihi - it was Xmas eve and the charger is in the supermarket carpark which was very full and busy - owner of a car arrived after a few minutes of waiting so didn't turn out to be an issue.

In terms of enforcement my understanding is that this is in the hands of the local body where the charger is rather than ChargeNet. Also will depend on where the charger is - many of the ChargeNet chargers are in supermarket carparks - usually at the back of the carpark away from the entrance to the supermarket so I assume  that any enforcement in these places will depend upon the supermarket as I assume the chargers are on their property.

I believe there should be government subsidy to purchase EVs in Aotearoa but the subsidy should be asset and income tested so those most in need can get the assistance.

That makes a whole lot of sense. Probably a grey area though. Say you are on an average income = success. Say you own your own home, that may well trigger a fail, as by simply cashing up some equity you can buy any EV you wish, but the substantial premium may prove to be a no buy. Yes we want to buy a new car but no help so will get a fuel efficient ICE or a hybrid. The issue you need to overcome is that you buy a basic standard new car but you pay a price that denotes a premium car.

Maybe a period where despite what RUC gets implemented for electric vehicles, you get a 5 year waiver. Maybe dealers are incentivised to offer no interest 5 year deals?  But such a period needs to be when there is a wider range of EV's available. Thats doesn't appear to be the case now.

Hmmm, subsidy to buy EV’s based on asset/income testing. Should farmers, who have massive assets, and high incomes, be incentivised to go electric? What about plumbers - there are more $1m+ plumbing businesses in NZ than any other single business type.

My feeling is that subsidies are incentives, and therefore if we are serious about emissions and climate change, then let’s incentivise everyone, and especially where it will make impacts.

I thought you said previously that asset and income testing was prohibitively expensive and didn't work? Why would this be different for electric vehicles compared to superannuation?

@Handle9 Yes I did and I have adjusted my view to a degree. There can be different levels of means testing and for the subsidy on motor vehicles it could be a less intense compared to a means test for ongoing income which needs to be tested and confirmed annually. What we need to avoid is folks with say $100,000 in the bank receiving a subsidy on a $$50,000 EV.

Wouldn't having a across the board flat rate per pure EV car (eg. $5000) be more acceptable as opposed to percentage per price (eg. 5% off 200K)?
That way, someone buying an budget leaf gets the same relief as someone purchasing a top of the line tesla.

@cokemaster regretfully the government does not have a bottomless pot of money and I believe the assistance should be targeted at those in most need. This will help meet the desire to have as many people as possible to dump their ICE vehicles. I look at my circumstance and I can afford to buy an EV and have currently a Hybrid, I do need a subsidy and would not take a subsidy. I would prefer a person on limited means received the assistance.

I'm more shocked that you can't buy a "dirty" car soon but you can still buy a used imported 1, 2 or 3 crash star rated car no worries at all......

AFAIK the Clean Car Standard applies to used imports. Its about clean cars not crash ratings

I'm aware of that, it's more the point that they haven't done anything about the safety of used imports at the same time as emissions.

I do confess that I lust after a Jaguar E-Pace but also long to be able to ride my E-Bike again and especially to be able to ride it around my town safely.

MikeB4: People need to realise that our lives need to change a little so that those that come after us won’t live in a nightmare world. Making a couple of stops on a trip is nothing compare to what our mokopuna and beyond may endure.

What about the mokopuna in the DRC who are digging up cobalt so some rich westerners can feel smug about doing 'their bit' for 'climate change' by driving expensive EVs?

Its ok though, cos with advancement in battery technology, less children will die for our EV's. Tesla only use 4.5kg of Cobalt nowadays, compared to 12kg in early models.

I think my kids needing to live a bit further away from the beach in 50 years is nothing compared with the plight of kids in developing nations today.
