I’ve got a SIM card in one of my Porsche’s, but to be honest I gave up on it and just stream whatever through my phone, it’s a lot less hassle. Porsche connectivity is definitely on the way out, in favour of CarPlay. Not having CarPlay in Tesla’s is a negative, in my view.

Tesla has opened their order page for the Tesla Model 3 for New Zealand, with deliveries expected to start in August.

With the options available it starts at $74,960 (incl. ORC) for the rear wheel drive standard range, and maxes out at $113,360 for the Performance model four wheel drive with full self driving autopilot.

I like Telsa.. I like the tech, I like the CEO and I like their vision... but they still sell premium cars, don't they? too much ($$$$) for many of us! 😅

But does your Porsche have any media capability with that SIM? Tesla's method is to reduce the need for your phone in the car, helped by the fact that their cars have tablet sized touch screens in them. So you get a full Spotfiy interface where you can search, select playlists, create playlists etc without needing your phone. You also have access to YouTube and Netflix for when you're parked.

I too used to think Tesla was making a mistake by not including CarPlay but having owned one now for a few months I just haven't needed it.

i don’t think so, no. I don’t use Spotify I use Apple Music, and I like to have the same playlists etc with me in all my cars, my ride-on mower, my stereo etc etc. CarPlay allows me to use the same phone for navigation in each car also. I can only really cope with managing one setup, across multiple vehicles, albeit my Golf doesn’t have CarPlay.

Sure, they don't sell cheap cars.

But if you compare the other EVs on the market they are not terribly expensive. Compared to a regular ICE car, they are more expensive - mostly because batteries are still expensive.

Here are some price comparisons. The Tesla Model 3 starts at around $80,000. That gives you a rear wheel drive car with 460 KM range, and 0-100 KMH in 5.6 seconds.

Nissan Leaf, 270 KM range. FWD. 0-100 kmh in 7,9 seconds: $60,000. Probably the cheapest new EV you can buy in NZ today.

Hyundai Kona Electric. 449KM range. 0-100 kmh in 9.7 seconds (7.6 in a more expensive version). From $78,000.
Easily matches the Tesla in price if you add some extras and want a better acceleration. Have not looked at the fine details, but my impression is that its pretty much on par with the Tesla price.

My performance model 3 was $66,000 cheaper than the equivelant BMW to buy and will save around $5k in fuel etc a year.

Yes its not a cheap car but thats how you scale up new technology

The playlists, music tastes, etc transfer to the Tesla because you can sign into Spotify in the car with your normal account, if you use Spotify. There's no Apple Music yet but I'm sure that's just a matter of time

Depends if there was a contract between Spotify and Tesla. If not could be a possibility of adding Apple Music to the Tesla.

Looks like sonos is via alexa too, interesting didn't know that as I don't apple ( hate it tbh)

I don't count iTunes as that's effective an apple device, but I'm surprised with the amazon link, and the android app

Well... For me paying $60k for a car that only does ~ 300km range, is very expensive.

If I would purchase a Nissan Leaf, for example, it would be my only vehicle. I cannot afford to have a vehicle for commute and a vehicle for roadtrips, long distances, etc.

So, imagine me traveling around New Zealand in a Nissan Leaf that only does 300 kms range. That would (not) be fun.

People road trip in 24 kwh leafs, sure it takes time and planning but it's not impossible.

For me a leaf wouldn't fit what I needed so...

I didn't buy one. It's easy really.

Somehow it just seems wrong that someone who can afford more than one Porsche still can't use an apostrophe correctly

11/10 for car taste, 2/10 for grammar
