Kia Niro prices have been released; personally not interested in hybrid versions, but the two BEVs are priced at $68k and $74k.

The Niro EV, meanwhile, features a single 150kW/255Nm electric motor paired to a 64.8kWh battery. Kia claims a range of 460km per charge, with battery efficiency of 16.2kWh/100km. The 11kW on-board charger helps the Niro charge from 10% to 80% capacity in just over 40 minutes when plugged into a DC fast charger.

[Question - does that last line make sense? It’s clearly indicating the 11kW on-board (AC) charger has an impact on its (DC) fast charging time - I’m confused!]

No, that last line does not make sense at all lol. the 11kW on board charger is for AC charging and is not used for DC charging.

I’d expect that kind of slip up by the mainstream motoring press, but not really acceptable from a specialist EV news site.

Kia leading the way with its non-flagship EV range pricing. You watching Hyundai?

i don't believe they are actually going to try to sell 10 different models to people

or maybe choice is good for sales?

If they are built to specification I guess it doesn't really matter to them. And a "low" sticker price + upselling features is a tried and true way of selling cars... The rebate might make that a bit tricker for some EVs (Like the EV6 and Ioniq 5, I would assume) - but still..

HarmLessSolutions: Saw this diagram posted somewhere lately. The best representation of comparisons between the strenghts/weaknesses of the various battery chemistries currently on offer

That diagram is published in this Electric Vehicles in New Zealand: Technologically Challenged? paper from 2013. More recent comparisons seems to be

I'd like to see an update of this Ragone chart from the 2013 article with these newer / other chemistries.

A Ragone chart depicting the range of specific energy and power levels achievable by current generation battery cell technology. Note that the specific energy and power of the final assembled battery pack will be lower than that of the constitutive cells [15].

From the article:

BYD ATTO 3 is slated to become the first BYD passenger vehicle sold in Japan, with sales expected to begin in January 2023. BYD DOLPHIN and BYD SEAL are expected to follow soon after, hitting the market in the middle and second half of 2023, respectively.

So we would start seeing them as used imports sometime in 2025/26?

gzt: NASCAR plans electric race series with major OEMs:

I suspect the biggest risk of introducing EVs into their race portfolio will be that they will make the ICE race cars look like slugs in terms of performance.

In terms of a drag race,? Yes most probably .

In terms of a distance race which most races are I'd say probably not. The energy density of fossil fuels will win the day by quite a magin I suspect. You might get 400 to 500 km out on the open road but that figure will diminish significantly on the race trace, sure regenerative braking will help claw back the difference but unless the race distances are curated to suit the EV battery capacity I think the ICE cars will win the day for most races.

In terms of improving EV development this will be a good thing. Battery management technology will get a good kick along I would imagine with the high draw requirements interspersed with high inputs from regenerative braking.

Pit stops would be interesting. Pull into the pits, jack the car, change the tires, drop the car off the jacks, plug in the charge cable………..go and have a spot of lunch and a toilet break………… jump back into the car and rejoin the race. (/joking)

yeah probably,

the thing is the more supply we get the better for prices

I would think if you wanted to realistically pit an ICE and an EV head to head, the EV would need swappable battery packs. Pull into the pits, push one pack in to slide the old one out, or some such.

They're talking 30 minute races with no battery swap or charging (apart from regen). Shouldn't be too difficult to spec an EV to do that, in very fast lap times.
