That's about the same price as Atto 3..
Which one's better?
Batman:
That's about the same price as Atto 3..
Which one's better?
Interestingly the pricing seems to have gone from MG's website, but the below is from google cache:
Excite: $49990 Driveaway (before rebate)
Essence: $52,990 Driveway (before rebate)
Atto3 standard range is $52,990 +ORC (before rebate)
Atto3 extend range is $57,990 + ORC (before rebate)
If we compared the two base cars, and assumed a $1000 ORC on the atto3 (I have no idea), then we are talking about a $4k premium on the latter. Nearly 10% on post rebate price. Small, but not negligible.
Should note there is quite a bit range and power jump in the post face-lift mg zs ev, below specs is for the post face-lift car.
Heaps of shootouts online:
https://thedriven.io/2022/02/22/australias-cheapest-evs-go-head-to-head-byd-atto-3-vs-mg-zs-ev/
On specs the Atto3 seems better, but there is nothing wrong with the MG ZS EV. A extended family member has a old style MG ZS EV. Build quality isn't quite at the standard of Japanese car's, but personally I don't care if my bonnet is 3mm above the fender pannel. Very good back seat and boot space for a car of this size.
Advantage MG ZS EV:
- Boot space (470L vs 440L) Below image is of the MG ZS EV (it has a false floor that would have been removed for the photo):
- 360 degree camera in base trim
- Sunroof in top trim
- SAIC parent brand more respected than BYD
- Petrol version also being available might make parts like windscreens easier to come by.
- Glass roof
- Mature, has been in production a few years
- Charge port on front, rather than side of the car (atto3 is on the right side, just ahead of the drivers door) - a bit of personal preference in this for AC charging depending on parking space layout, but for public charging all DC chargers are set up to be fine with the frount charge port (as the leaf was the most common ev in years gone by), but older DC chargers ones have cord that are a bit short for cars with charge ports on the side, sometimes requiring creative parking - audi's and the new LDV ev ute will be worse impacted than the atto3.
Advantage Atto 3:
- More range: 345km / 420km WLTP, vs 320km WLTP on the MG ZS EV standard range (only version being offered here)
- more power (150kW vs 130kW)
- Faster acceleration 0-100: (7.3s vs 8.6s)
- Ground clearance (175mm vs 161mm)
- 700kg unbraked / 750kg braked tow rating (vs 500kg)
- Power adjust drivers and passengers seat (MG only gets powered driver seat on top trim)
- 8 speaker sound system
- taller tires 215/55 R18 vs 215/50 R17 (will cost more to replace, but a bigger rolling diameter should deal with road imperfections better, and taller sidewalls should make it less prone to damage from pot holes and the likes)
- Hyped Blade type LFP batter with long life. (and which it is OK to charge to 100% daily, unlike other Chemistry where you are best to charge to 80% unless you really need 100% that day.
- some features as standard that are only offered on top trim ZS EV, like frount seat heaters, wireless phone charging.
Similar
- turning circle (Atto3: 11.0m vs ZE EV: 11.2m)
- Fast charge mas rate (75kW vs 70kw standard range / 80kw extended range)

I called Tristram MG this morning; they reckon Feb-Mar most likely for the new model, but maybe a bit earlier depending on shipping.
Is this for the ZS EV?
Brother has one ordered. Originally ordered the previous ev model, but switched when the ZS came up for order. Initially told delivery likely July-Aug (2022), then Oct seemed more likely. Feb-Mar 2023 is extending that out a lot ...!

MG4 is now available in UK (or will be this month) and seems a good upgrade on the ZS for minimal extra cost. Potentially "early 2023" for MG4 availability for NZ? Perhaps another switch in his order ...?
Well rated so far - "... leagues ahead of what we’ve seen from MG thus far" (TopGear).
Haven't found a direct comparison with the ZS yet though, so not certain how size compares?

9/10: "On the face of it, the MG4 doesn’t seem like a very exciting car - certainly not something Top Gear would give a massively high score to. But when you dig into what it does for the money, how high it scores on multiple levels, it’s probably the only car in the class to recommend. It’s got range, charging, equipment, zippy dynamics and now some style."

re MG4 vs ZS
From respective reviews on WhichEV site, cargo space is
Quite a bit less space unless rear seats are down ...!
https://www.whichev.net/2022/08/26/mg4-ev-2022-review/5/
Tow capacity only 500 kg for the std range (same as ZS?)
SaltyNZ:
Yeah I was talking to my wife about it this morning as we drove in - with second-hand MG ZS EVs now starting to appear on the market, or older ioniqs ... the case for keeping a Leaf with 150,000km on it and putting a $20K battery in it gets weaker by the day.

The ZS really does excel in terms of boot space.
8 banana boxes on Bjorn's test, same as a substantially larger kia EV6.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2c58BWEplDc
Boot comes configured false floor, configured by default in high mode. (good if you keep a bunch of rarely used stuff in your car as you can tuck it away below). But you gain quite a bit of space by putting it in low mode. (for the test, Bjorn removed the floor pan, and loaded to the steal spare wheel well.
On that note, it has a spare wheel well, if you wanted to carry a spare tire, in that car you could have it under the boot floor (in high mode).

here is a direct comparison of the two cars from HK where it seems both models are available.
It's in Cantonese but there are English subtitles for those who don't understand Cantonese :-)
They do present an exhaustive comparison and each car wins in certain areas but they don't come down to one choice.
I might be biased since I bought the ATTO3 but after seeing this review I don't think I would have chosen the MG over it - it seems like quite a boring car. But as they say YMMV and anyway a bird in the hand and all that. I will wait for the OTA updates for Android Auto and Maps
Linuxluver:
Agreed. This replacement battery has been under development for at least 4 years. I saw an old LEAF with Carl Barlev driving it that had 38kWh battery. You can happily charge to 100% via AC.....but on a DC charger it behaved like a 24kWh LEAF. You couldn't fill it up. Mind you this, this was 3 years ago at the charger in Taupo. I was hoping Walter at EVs Enhanced would be able to carry it forward quickly.....but I guess not. Maybe regulatory issues. Compliance issues.....don't know.
The moment is passing.....
If it allows you to use it like any other LFP battery and abuse the hell out of it, it would still be a useful upgrade for the 40kwh ZE1 cars - given it would free you frpm the constraints of babying the current chemistry in the current batteries, and fix any rapid-gating issues with multiple DC charges. Many of those will be down to sub-200km actual, usable range by now.
Hopefully there'd be a decent credit for a healthy 40kwh battery pack as well - so even if the LFP battery doesn't stack up at 20K in the old shape, the supply of second-hand 40kwh batteries might give it a better upgrade path if you're still keen to just use it as a commuter car.
Sure but the catch is, right now it doesn't allow you to use it like anything because it doesn't exist, and there's no date for when it will. I'm going to put a deposit on an MG ZS EV tomorrow, it's just wasting my time otherwise.

Sounds like the new MG is on a similar delivery schedule as the batteries. V. awkward timing.
At least MG will take your money and give you an approximate date (and you can be sure there actually will be a car).

I paid my deposit on 7 July and got my BYD on 25 August.
The word from a local EV dealer is that EVs Enhanced are really struggling to get their 16 blade battery over the line due to technical and sfaff difficulties. His take on the situation is that they won't be available until sometime next year and potentially up to 12 months away.
He is in agreement about the points raised in this thread especially in regard to suggested pricing as new EVs (and ex-Japan 2nd hand) are becoming cheaper. EVs Enhanced are at risk of 'missing the boat' on this if they don't come up with the goods quick smart.
