At least MG will take your money and give you an approximate date (and you can be sure there actually will be a car).

I paid my deposit on 7 July and got my BYD on 25 August.

Yeah I mentioned the BYD and the Good Cat to my wife last night as other possible options and she took about 1 nanosecond to say NOOOOO! to each. So, I guess we're going MG. :-D

The word from a local EV dealer is that EVs Enhanced are really struggling to get their 16 blade battery over the line due to technical and sfaff difficulties. His take on the situation is that they won't be available until sometime next year and potentially up to 12 months away.

He is in agreement about the points raised in this thread especially in regard to suggested pricing as new EVs (and ex-Japan 2nd hand) are becoming cheaper. EVs Enhanced are at risk of 'missing the boat' on this if they don't come up with the goods quick smart.

The credit for a relatively healthy ZE1 battery will be the key, IMO. As charming as the Gen 1 cars are, they're now getting pretty old and many are missing things like 6kw charging.

Depending on where the Yen washes up this month I may have to bit the bullet and accept getting one out of Japan is too difficult and unlikely to be cost-effective.

Well my wife looked at the HK comparison review I posted and was pretty happy with the Atto3. Plus being a car from China there are just so many accessories you can get from Ali. She likes these door mats

She didn't like the style of the Atto3, and of the Good Cat she said 'It looks quirky like a Beetle. I like it when other people have Beetles. But not us.' 🤣

Sometimes rapid decisiveness is really nice.

On my comparison before I missed that the new ZS EV 50.3kWh also gets a lithium iron phosphate battery. And the car itself gets a better warranty than the BYD (7 years unlimited km) - but I haven't dug into the terms and exclusions

Getting the LFP battery alone would be a strong motivation to wait for the new release, vs buying an used one now.

Have you picked the trim level yet? $3k is relatively cheap to step up to the top trim, but on the other hand, the entry trim is pretty well appointed.

The new MG ZS EV Excite features as standard:

17-inch milled alloy rims
LED headlights and tail-lights
Reversing camera
MG Pilot
360-degree camera
10.1-inch floating touchscreen infotainment system
Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and satellite navigation
Seven-year/unlimited km warranty (vehicle and HV battery)
Precise Price Servicing.

In addition to features included on the Excite, the Essence has:

Blind-spot monitoring
Rear traffic alert
Stargazer panoramic sunroof
Six-speaker stereo
Power folding side mirrors
PU + PVC seats
Wireless phone charger
Front seat heating
Six-way electrically adjustable driver seat.

Yes, we'll opt for the higher trim. The wireless charger is handy, and everyone seems to have gone crazy for the heated seats since we've had the Tesla, even though our Leaf has them too. I guess it's partly because we never really had oodles of spare battery in the Leaf for frivolous things like "not wearing 6 jumpers".

The MG and ATTO3 compare well. What is one omission on the MG is the electric tailgate which is what th ATTO3 has which I do like.

No Apple Carplay yet or Android Auto but coming soon apparently.

The only hope is if the price to produce batteries continues to fall and that does ever reach the consumer EVs enhanced may be able to eventually reduce the price. They also sound like they want to license is to global partners, so other markets might find more use for it if they miss the boat here. Really they must price it at worst to be competitive with just buying another second hand vehicle instead. The 70kwh pack is what I'd love to consider but they haven't said hardly anything on that thing yet.

What are people's thought on a cars useful life? I read somewhere in the states it's something like an average of 12 years of life before a car is removed from the road, some of those will be caused by accidents but that number sounds like a sizeable number of carsare run until they become uneconomical to repair. If an lfp battery really can last the million miles and beyond that people claim will we see the average age increase as there's less parts to fail? I do feel like the leafs have the potential to become a great hobbyist ev with companies like EVs enhanced offering the parts. Upgrade to the 16 blade to get rid of the biggest weakness, you can get Android auto on them now, and if they could find a way to offer a 7kw or 11kw ac charger upgrade that really would address pretty much all the minor problems people seem to have with them and keep them running a good long while. Scrapping them due to the poor battery seems incredibly wasteful as the rest of the cars are fine for anyone not needing fancy bells and whistles.

The average car commute in Auckland is something like 12km each way. There are a substantial number of people who will be perfectly happy with limited range cheap to run low maintenance vehicles for the 9-5 and a trip to the shops and a few local visits.

That presents an opportunity when the original recipient Leaf reaches the end of its mechanical life to transplant the 16 blade battery into another newer Leaf. Does that change the economics of spending $20K on a Gen 1 Leaf? If we were to put a $20K battery in a $5K car I'm sure I'd be thinking along those lines.

To some extent I wonder if full repower with the best performing new cells is the wrong approach for the economic utilisation of these first generation vehicles.

Put down a deposit on the MG this afternoon. Red, Essence (higher spec) trim. Was told there it might even be here before the end of the year.

My parents did the same, white Essence.
They were told possible ETA November.
They were looking at BYD but I think the whole servicing and warranty thing in Aus put them off.

Well if that was there only reason then they appear to be making a decision based on incorrect facts. The servicing in NZ is quite different to what is being proposed in Oz and after the major public outcry on social media over there, it appears BYD Oz have changed their warranty.

For some people the BYD styling can be quite polarising.  My wife didn't care and after driving the BYD and looking at umpteem videos of the MG, she was happy with the BYD. I think for her the only minor negative is the limited colour choices but then looking at the MG site there don't appear to be more choices there. Thhe Kia Niro has many more colours but that was much more expensive for us (well for me since I am paying!)
