As I suspected, Ford has priced a Mach-E model just under the rebate cap ($79,990). The top spec model is $124k

Mach-E choice spans from rebate-winner to racer — Motoringnz

That's a seriously ugly car.

No. Its a bog standard nice looking SUV, where you wont know the brand. Its NOT a Mustang. Might be a Toyo stang or a KIA stang or a Niss Stang.

Marketing at it again

Yeah, I’m in the group that thinks they should have just called it the Ford Mach-E. They could have made it “inspired by Mustang” but then wouldn’t be able to use the pony badges on it.

It’s actually a good looking vehicle in the flesh, both inside and out. There’s been some pretty ugly pony cars in the past.

People in this thread know how I feel about the $80K rebate cap, but I have to concede it has ‘encouraged’ car companies to offer something under $80K.

I expect they’ll probably sell in a 20/2/1 ratio for the $80K, $110K and $125K models respectively. The GT will need to be ‘shouty’ enough to appeal to the ‘look-at-me’ buyer.

A Mustang it certainly isn't. A Mustang is a 2 door Coupe not some SUV with a pony emblem on the nose.

I'm not a Ford man but I'd consider buying a proper Mustang but wouldn't cross the road to look at one of those. Take your pseudo Mustang SUV and stick it where the sun doesn't shine.

Yeah that 1974 Mustang II was a "man's man" car.:)
  • 2.3L 4-cylinder engine
  • 88hp
  • vinyl landau roof
  • based on the Ford "explod-o-matic" Pinto platform
  • 14.2 second 0-60
Unlike the new Mustang, 480 horsepower, with a 3.7 second 0-60. I mean how girly is that? :)

Design is subjective. Performance is not.

I find it hard to believe something that is, relatively speaking, a rocketship, is less worthy of the name.

Mustangs were the look of a model of car, racy sports cars, convertibles.  They never bought out a mustang pickup truck as far as I know.   Like mustang was a model, is wasn't a sub brand like HSV or Shelby, or Polestar. No-one is complaining about the performance, just that as an SUV style thing, its not a mustang.  Unless they want to expand the definition of Mustang to a sub brand of Ford.

Ford sold the 1974 Mustang II without a V8 option. Primarily because of the 1973 oil price crisis, when prices skyrocketed to NZD 67 cents per litre, US prices adjusted for inflation (wow that was a lots of calculations).

It was praised across most magazines of the time, and won MotorTrend Car of the Year, and sold extremely well.

Here's what "Popular Mechanic" from 2004 said

"For 1974, Mustang became the Mustang II. Essentially Ford started over. [CEO] Iacocca, who took over president of the division, laid out the design parameters.

The new Mustang would be small and sporty, riding on a wheelbase of 96 to 100 in. [1964 was 108. current EV is 118 inches]

It would be a coupe or fastback. No new convertible was plan.

The Mustang II became the right car for our times following the gasoline crunch in '73. Iacocca's "Little Jewel" became a smash hit.
...
The public saw the Mustang as a fun-to-drive economy choice…."

Interesting that you use the word "were" because of course Ford still sells Mustangs in NZ (and elsewhere) including the "High Performance 2.3L Fastback" and 3 V8 models.

It's just typical car company marketing to re-use an iconic name to attach the charisma of that model to something almost completely different. Hence the "new Beetle" and the "new Mini" that bear only a passing resemblance to the originals. I think many would argue that  the "High Performance 2.3L Fastback" also bears only a passing resemblance to an actual Mustang (and would barf at the "High Performance" label), because V8 power and sound are part of the iconic Mustang identity. A brand nowadays is just an asset to be depreciated by attaching other items to it.

Fairly interesting reading on where the Mini almost went.

Either way, we had Commodore and Falcon utes for years, cross-badging for things like XR8 and S/SS  across different platforms (not sure you'd get away with the SS thing anymore) and so on. It's nothing new, it's what car companies do.

Arguably the bodge-job they did to get the current Mustang to fit on the Gen 2 Supercars chassis is equally, if not more offensive than the EV.

Correct but I doubt anyone would think Cayenne should be called a 911. Both are quick but there's no way they're the same.

Porsche is all about hyper-fragmentation when it comes to their models either way, so the Taycan was always going to be a Taycan, etc.

But look at the Celica, it's been a RWD sports car, a FWD sportscar and at one stage a barn-storming AWD performance hero. No one would question its performance credentials or capability. The idea of what a 'Ford Escort' is changed rapidly over time as well.

A lot of the angst from the Mustang crowd seem to be that there's an SUV with a Pony badge with no engine or noise that will humiliate their V8s on a performance basis as a matter of course.

Ultimately it's Ford's brand, they get to choose what is and isn't a Mustang.
