Watch the video again. Electric Viking is at pains to differentiate between BEVs, PHEVs and 'self charging' hybrids.

Also I'm seeing a good percentage of EVs in surrounding traffic and despite knowing more than the average bear about EVs I'm aware there are plenty of EVs I'm failing to ID as EVs. I'm thinking that you and your kid's amateur poll may well be missing plenty.

I see a few Leafs. A few Tesla's, although Im not that bought in that I can recognise any traditional manufacture EV's. There are quite a few, but to me, unlike Leafs and Tesla's, they look like regular cars

Geektastic: I have yet to meet anyone who owns an EV. Hybrids seem far more popular although that might be a factor of not living in an urban location.

I know four other BEV people (three Leafs and a Model Y), plus two PHEV owners.

Come visit Waiheke. You can’t move for leafs (short range and cheap), plus loads of Tesla, a few mg and bmw etc. an $8k leaf with 80km range is perfect here

fair few others over summer (Porsche, Lamborghini, Audi, merc etc) but that’s the Auckland tourists.

Note also that the U.K. prices include VAT/GST at 20% rather than our 15%.

I've gone from knowing no one to, off the top of my head:

  • My parents
  • Our neighbour
  • One of my close friends
  • Another friend whomsts partner has a commercial interest in EVs
  • A family friend in Aus wanting to explore V2G options
  • And now myself.

Two other friends are looking, one considering full EV, the other a HEV for cost reasons. I generally don't talk to anyone else about cars, so that's pretty significant cut-through as far as I'm concerned, almost all of which has happened in the last two years.

NZ goes from 4% EV to 21% in less than 12 months - ICE only dead!

The Electric Viking

He must be counting hybrids as EVs?

"ICE only" is the clue... hybrids of any sort (including F1 with KERS, I guess) are not "ICE only".

I gave up watching this guy. So far as I'm concerned he is an over the top EV fan boy Toyota hater.

anyway, if you count hybrids, there is this new beast called "mild hybrid" ... 8kw motor and 1kwh battery ...

i suppose that can count either way in the stats department ...

Mazda seem to be marketing these mild/joke hybrids alongside their joke EV.  Maybe they're hoping one will help the other look not quite so comedic

Except his numbers are total BS and exemplify the problem when people without knowledge of the NZ car market look at headline numbers,  ( he is also just parroting the numbers from a Clean technica article)

Looking at back of envelope numbers,  in 2022 there were 16K new EVs sold out of a total of  116k new passenger care, so that's 14% OK, close to the 20%, .. BUT they fail to account for the ~50K utes added to the fleet , AND the 100K USED IMPORTS...

But, most people overseas don't appreciate that nearly 50% of the vehicles sold in NZ are used imports,  thus they only look at the headline new passenger numbers,

When you add them all together, the BEVs are about 7%, PHEVs are another 3% ... regular mild hybrids are 20%, Diesel 20% and Petrol 50%

Rented a Polestar 2 from Hertz at Wellington Airport yesterday. Nice car - as a Volvo owner it felt very familiar.

Rental conditions a joke though - you’re expected to return it with 90% battery charge. So queue for a charger near airport and wait for how long when you have a flight to catch?

I opted to have them charge it - will be interesting to see the cost.

Oh, and if you return it with less than 15% charge you pay an $80 penalty…

Slighly different topic but I have been trying to find a 20A charger for my Atto3 that only needs to have a caravan plug wired in the garage. Type 2 chargers like this seem to be out of stock or really expensive

I have found Type 1 portable chargers like this

https://smartevchargers.co.nz/shop/plug-in-ev-chargers/16a-ev-charger-blue-caravan-plug/

and just was wondering if I could use an adapter like this to work for my car with its Type 2 socket.

We use a Type 1 -2 adapter to charge our Polestar with our 7kW Juicepoint unit which has a Type 1 plug to match our Jap import Leaf.

Is the cost/effort in upgrading your garage wiring to 32A (for a 7kW charger) not practical?

I would seriously recommend you take advantage of 7kw charging at home if you can afford to get it installed. The actual wallbox doesn't have to be terribly smart if you can set charge timers in the car - the cheapest EVPOWER box is $699.

I've been living off 1.7kw three-pin sockets and I have to plug it in the second I get home to cover my trip to and from work the next day. It's bougie hell. I've got a wallbox to fit to my next house and I'm hoping for a 6.6kva PDM from a wrecker in Europe at some point, which will radically transform how usable my car is.

As per my post above, Hertz charged me $13.80 for 38km of electricity. Would have been cheaper to hire an ICE!
