Some sub models do not have the same levels of safety despite looking similar, two examples i can think of ZZ12x corollas, most jap imports only have twin airbags were some local models have 4 airbags, CL7 Accord Euro R's have nice recaro seats but miss out on side airbags afforded to the local models, no side airbags could altar the outcome in a t bone situation I'm sure

alasta: Kia Rio, $135. I just checked my records and it cost me $285 last year!

Same for my 2008 Ford Mondeo.

I can't even find the model of car I drive (must be an Australian unique model - HSV Senator) but the closest one I can find is $137.80 per year.  Compared to the $900~ I'm paying here, woah.

I suspect that any care that needs a 6 month WOF will be considered unsafe in the eyes of the bureaucrats.

Probably because it only has 2 airbags and ABS. By today's standards that's pretty basic. New ACC rates are based on the safety rating of individual vehicles eg ANCAP or Euro equivalent safety rating. Nothing to do with age or 6/12 month WOF. Fact is simply newer cars are safer. NZ has old vehicle fleet by international standards, they are trying to incentivise people to buy safer cars.

I understood they used actual crash data to decide which cars were safest.  We have two 1997 cars with very much the same safety features, one is a "2" and one is "3".

if you look at all the black ice crashes (my respects for the lost and resting) ... they were all those with no electronic stability program

i do acknowledge the rates are not based on presence of ESP but airbags which didn't do much when matched against a bus etc

They should charge even less for new models that have low speed collision control and lane guidance systems. But I doubt their systems are setup for those pieces of technology yet. Another good feature would be a warning when you are over the speed limit which some new cars now have built into the GPS. I think that sort of technology should be mandatory on new cars as it certainly helps.

There's more to it than just airbags. It is based on how the car performs in crash tests, so how it is designed and built, as well as the technology that goes into the handling and stability.

Not just crash tests; actual crash data.  How often are the cars in crashes, what rate of injury/death from the crashes.  All normalised of course.

It makes sense though.  The "safer" car is a Primera, the "less safe" car is a 626.  I know which I'd rather be in for the "moose test" let alone actually hitting anything.

@lucky015, @trig42
I just rang the ACC number (0800 222 776) about my 1998 r34 skyline category (cat 1).  I was told there's a known issue with the skyline grouping which they are rectifying.  They took my details and will let me know the correct rego fee once its sorted.
If you haven't already paid your rego you might like to give them your details too.

lucky015:
trig42: $238 for a 2001 Skyline.

They have lumped ALL skylines in as one (from 1977 onwards). Bit unfair I think.

Getting rid of it shortly.

Same for my 2002 Skyline (V35)

Really seems like its been put together by some monkey with a blatant disregard for the difference in vehicle models and their relative safety features if it is the correct pricing.
