Dingbatt:

Are all of the features allowed in NZ?

$11400 was out of the question, but $5700……..

I wonder if not enough customers are willing to pony up the sum for FSD so they needed to offer this again. The other thing missing is (the promised) nav on city streets, but NZ probably wouldn’t allow that anyway.

I’m not fussed on the “stop at traffic lights” but I did like the “lights gone green, you dummy!” chime that the FSD equipped car I test drove had.

The Auto Lane Change intrigues me most. Particularly since there isn’t blind spot monitoring in the traditional sense. Do you indicate, and if it’s safe, the car changes lanes?

If it was subscription it might be $NZ200/month for EA if it’s $US200 for FSD, so just over 2 year payback. It’s a shame the software enhancement doesn’t stay with the customer rather than the vehicle.

Edit: Oh and thanks for the heads up @Obraik

Yeah I'm not quite sure the reasoning of having the "chime on green" function tied to the FSD package. Once FSD actually becomes FSD then the car will take off on its own at the green light.

As for changing lanes, yes, while you have Autopilot active on the motorway you can turn on your indicator in the direction you want to change and the car will do so if its safe. It won't change if it detects a car in the way or if it thinks a car in that lane is closing the gap too quickly. You also get Navigate on Autopilot which depending how you configure it, will automatically change lanes without your input (other than a hand on the wheel) if the car in front is slow or to get into the left lane to take the exit (which it will also do). I personally don't let it change lanes without my confirmation simply because it can be a bit of a nana about getting into the left lane far too early before the exit.

I think its a definite FSD feature so thats why its there, was more to test and train the NN than a useful thing but it lead to being able to drive through traffic lights on AP (or not) which is certainly an FSD feature

I also don't think this is going away anytime soon now that it's part of the order process. Last time it was brought back it was only available as an upgrade post-purchase and not on the "order new car" page.

They reached out to the Owners Club a few months back to see if there was interest in it becoming an option. The overwhelming response was that yes, people would like it as an option like it is in Europe...so I'm assuming it's related to that.

I have been pondering the “Enhanced Autopilot” offering since it was announced. While I was quite interested initially I’m now looking at the package and questioning whether it’s worth $5700?

From my perspective apart from the Navigate on Autopilot and Auto lane changing, the rest of the features are party tricks. Auto park seems a bit hit and miss (hopefully more of the latter😁) by some of the videos I have watched and smart summon seems to have no practical use (except to show off). I guess the first time I get “parked in” somewhere I will wish I had summon to extricate my car.

99% of the time I know where I’m going and most navigation is to urban addresses (FSD feature?), so even NoA is of questionable value for me.

I do wish Tesla allowed individual features to be purchased. It’s only software after all.

As mentioned further back, I've had EAP for almost two years now. Initially I thought the features I would use most would be "auto" lane changing and auto park. In reality, what I actually use most is "auto" lane change and "dumb" summon in its various forms. More specifically, what I use dumb summon for is to have the car put itself in a park. I'll line up and put the butt of the car in the park (you can also go nose first), double tap the park button on the stalk, tap the button on the screen to tell it which direction to go and then get out of the car. The car will then put itself perfectly into the park without me having to squeeze between my door and the car next to me if I want to get out all my work guff. I also use dumb summon somewhat often to send the car out of the garage when I need extra space or if I'm going to wash the car.

I use Auto park more these days then I originally did now that it uses the cameras to find parks and no longer requires that there be a car on either side of an empty park. It's still slower than parking myself..except when it comes to parallel parking, which I will freely admit that I cannot do myself lol.

NoA is a bit iffy in New Zealand, especially Christchurch motorways. Whenever it wants to take an exit it will start reducing its speed on the motorway rather than on the offramp like any normal person is. The result is that it will start going 90 on the motorway which defeats the purpose of an offramp. I don't remember it being like that in Auckland so it may be just a lack of data issue.

I use smart summon occasionally at work when it's raining. It does successfully get itself from its park to the door that I'm waiting at although I wouldn't say it does it in a confident way. I would never use it in a busy car park in its current state.

@Obraik

Most of the videos I had watched were at least a year old, so is it likely the Autopark was relying on the ultrasonic sensors rather than cameras?

How good is it at NOT kerbing the wheels?

Most of Tesla NZ’s demo vehicles have FSD so it may give me a chance to try some of these features when I test drive a Y.

At the moment that amount of money gets me a switchboard upgrade, and an EVSE in the garage with enough left over for an auto frunk.

Or 8 extra solar panels.

Or a third of a Powerwall.

But you make a compelling case for EA, and I do like that kind of thing……….

Yeah the change to use the cameras with Autopark was made around October last year. I haven't had it kerb the wheels yet but I have had to stop it once or twice pre-camera change over as it looked like it was going to clip the car next to me. I feel like it has been more capable since the camera update

Trying it all out in a test drive is a good option, although you do get a 48 hour window to refund the purchase if you want to try it out in your own car. It does mean you'll be without the $5700 for a little bit, though.

So with the ‘dumb summon’, if you want to back the car out of the garage, will the car stop if it thinks it’s getting too close to something? I ask because when I back out of the garage (straight back) the car’s proximity alarms are binging and bonging telling me to stop because of the garage door frame.

Yes, it will stop if it detects something. Mine does the same when I reverse out manually but when I use summon it will hesitantly start backing out and then once it realises everything is fine it will continue. It can be a bit overcautious if you have a large lip on the entrance to your garage as well.
