OMG, I've scrolled through the last 3 pages as I can see where its going. Maybe tomorrow I will read them...

Anti EV fans dig in. EV fans dig in. Hard for anyone else to filter out the reality.

I like EV's. But I dont own one. We have 2 ICE cars and one ICE motorbike. Ownership is no issue but it doesnt work for us, thats fine. But I get tired of EV fans preaching and also the ICE fans preaching.EVs work for some, not others. As time goes on that will favour EV's, we all know that . And thats pretty much now for many. Its a pity that this topic becomes Apple vs Android, Ford vs Holden, etc

Finally there are a nice range of EV options.

I was just pondering this, this morning. Thinking how limited the selection was here compared to internationally. Mainly by virtue of driving on the ‘wrong’ side of the road, but also being an insignificant market isolated at the bottom of the world. The upside of that though, is we aren’t subject to a lot of low quality dross that mass LHD markets are likely receiving.

I was watching a YouTube video of the Cybertruk being cold weather tested here in NZ. Had to smile when the YTer asked how many people in EnZee had the Cybertruk on order. Not many if the Model S and X are anything to go by.

While im not deeply embedded into EV as some are here, I read the news. There are many models now, and more arriving. Thats a good thing. Although government wise, Id like to see distribution being electric. Trains. And the "last mile" being electric (short range trucks). IMO thats good for the planet, commuting to work or school runs, nt so much, but obviously anything that helps is worthwhile.

Yep EVs are great and personally the saving the planet bit rarely enters my mind. I have two ice cars and two motorcycles, plus our MK2 MG ZS.

My daily 110km work round trip run costs $4.50 in the EV compared to $18 in the 2l petrol, that's what I like.

Plus the power and torque curves petrol and diesel options can only dream about.

I'm sure this is caused by deforestation. But I'm not a climate scientist. It just makes sense. Forests breathe carbon dioxide. Burning forests is a double punch and is doomed our planet.

I think your concept is misguided.

I see desinformation, lies and FUD being spread. Not cool.

Scott3:

Should note that Petrol & Diesel already have a an effective environmental tax on them via the ETS. Why should they be taxed additionally when other fuels (i.e. industrial coal, BBQ LPG) are not...

I think 'effective' is entirely debatable. To be 'effective' it needs to be a lot higher than it is.

Fiordland:

EV's are heavy,

Not as heavy as a Ford Ranger.

each new EV on NZ roads uses coal

We average around 85% renewable electricity generation. Only a minority of our power comes from coal. 100% of the energy from an ICE comes from fossil fuel. And furthermore, most EVs are charged overnight during the otherwise minimum load - so their actual coal use is even less than 15%.

Fiordland:

EV's have terrible range and are hideously expensive in upfront cost,

I drove my EV from Warkworth to Upper Hutt in 9.5 hours. I don't think you can get there any faster in an ICE unless you enjoy peeing into a bottle.

Azzura:

NIO finally adds its solid-state battery to user manuals, arrival of 930 km range option imminent

Cool...is 930km a lot? Enough?

That's heaps. Enough to do a lap of either island and then recharge at home.

A great example of the rate at which battery technology is improving. I imagine another plus for this is the expected cycle life of solid state batteries. Add V2G to the vehicle's functionality with negligible effect on battery degradation and we have a world beater.

My Model 3 is the most fun I've had driving since the Impreza of my youth. And to put that into perspective, said Impreza would now be older than the 1979 Cortina I traded in when I bought it.

Back to EVs...ish - I noticed the charger at the BP at Taupiri is still free. Stopped in there this morning so my daughter could grab something to eat before we did an Escape Room in Hamilton and thought I may as well spend 5 minutes on the charger. Got out the BP app ... but it was already running. So the fact they were super busy and took 10 minutes to make a coffee for my mum worked out well. I thought all the BP ones were paid now?
