The real issue is that there's no comparable EV product to stack up against the Ranger... yet. Not much point in a comparison until that capability exists.

Well, there are, but not much chance of them arriving in NZ any time soon now the clean car scheme has ended.

Who makes them?

Sorry, I meant ones that would have qualified for the clean car discount. The Rivian looks to be about $30k over the cutoff?

Top end ICE utes wouldn't make the clean car discount either; a 3L Wildtrak is $83K. And there is no clean car discount anyway so I don't see how that's relevant.

@Zeon: Hey guys, how much have EV prices come down and can dealers be negotiated with to clear stock of these (anyone bought recently)? I'm thinking to get one (yes crazy time I know) but would really want to see a drop in price - and apaprently the market is flooded with them so seems a good time to negotiate....

I was recently offered a Kona Elite 64kwh by Hyundai for $56k. No negotiating at all. Hyundai chat offers an "ex-demo" option if you talk to it. I'm guessing they are creating 'demo' vehicles for this purpose daily ; ). (Moved from RUC thread)

Wow, that is an impressive discount (assuming that is a recent post facelift car). They have that trim listed on line at a RRP of $89,990.

Of course, this car has been overpriced, The e-Niro over at it's sister brand is offered only with a 64kWh pack, and got a big price cut a few years back, that the Kona never matched.

The Volkswagen auto group brands have kind of set the tone for the market with slashing $20k from their i.d.4, bringing its price down to $59,990.

I'm not involved with anything to do with HY anymore but my gut feeling was the car was priced at an acceptable level when it was really just the Tesla, Niro and Kona/Ioniq in the market here but then it was never really revisited, even after the Ioniq 5 was released which is vastly superior in almost every way.

Mehrts:

Tesla Superchargers coming to Nelson and Dunedin Q3 this year.

They're really filling in the gaps with decent charging infrastructure.

The West Coast of the South Island still needs some attention though. It's pretty barren at the moment.

These sites are going to be great to have for the holiday period. I expect they'll be open to all EVs as well like all the other new Supercharger installs. Looks like Tesla will beat Chargenet for getting seeding the South Island with highspeed chargers.

Yeah, although  they are not strictly comparable, The Rivian is a significantly heavier vehicle with a smaller payload weight (~800kg) vs 1.2 tonne for the Ford,  -

Although on the plus wide, if you did have one in NZ, your RUC extension continues until at least Dec 2025 as its over 3.5 tonne Gross :)

long story short, wife car got written off in an accident and ive been considering an EV as a replacement for a while now.

Would be predominantly used for the daily commute (70km), and lugging the kids round to their activities each day, so would need at least 100km of range but more would probably be desirable.
Would initially be charged off a 10A circuit till i could put in a 7kw wall charger. Would prefer the car had a larger charger as well to make use of this. We are thinking of solar if that makes any different to the decision.
Im 6 Foot 2in, so something comfortable for me to drive would be good.
2 kids s a decent boot space would be good.
Android auto is a bonus but needs to have at least Bluetooth for calls.

Budget is sub $20K unless there is something special that pops up and could maybe extend up to about $25K

The only EV i have driven is my sisters-in-law's Ford Mustang Mach e, so nothing really comparable in this sort of price range.

Any suggestions/thoughts?

At the sub $20K point you are mainly looking at second hand Leafs from memory.
Get a 30KW over the 24KW just for the extra range.

My 2016 24KW leaf does about 90-100km a charge now in summer (~10 Bar 70-75% Battery left I guess), but will do less in winter, and the leaf car generally loses about 2-3% range a year

Can you quality for a interest free green loan from a bank - that might give you some extara money if you want something else?

The leaf us suprisingly roomy and has a large boot.

Thanks, the green home loan might be worth a look as ironically ive been getting solar quotes this week so could kill 2 birds with one stone.

No! Ex-30kWh Leaf owner here. They're junk: either get a 24 or a 40. The 30s kill their batteries with undetected hotspots.

After 149,000km mine needed three stops to get 55km from my house to GVM, at which point they said it wasn't worth trying to replace the couple of failed cells that were dragging the pack down.
