The same price as ICE model of equivalent spec. Bearing in mind, the range of the ICE will be the same forever. The range of the EV will decrease over time (depending on how much you use it of course - use more, decline faster).

Interesting thought.

Is the range of the ICE the same forever? :-)

As the petrol engine ages it becomes less efficient....and feul efficiency falls....so the range per tank will decline.

Sure....you can fill it up again.

You can charge an EV again.

It would be good to compare an ICE engine that's had zero maintenance (so it it's comparable with an EV motor) with an EV after 5 years. Would the ICE still run at all? Something major might have broken.....delivering zero range. :-)

Google Timeline also does it automatically.

I also have a Navman MiVue dash cam.

For LEAF stats, LEAFSpy Pro logs at a user-specified interval to a CSV file that can be uploaded to Dropbox automatically. I've imported these into spreadsheets and graphed various bits of data.

If you still carry a wallet, check what's printed on your nz currency, which bird equals what denomination. I'm guessing @Ruki doesn't have mobile EFTPOS...

;-) No point of hiring it for one day. And I am doubtful there will be many with Leafs if any at all... I assume there will be more who wish to get the taste of EV - i.e. potential future owners. Today was a good day!

I'd told myself that once Gisborne had a fast charger I'd make the return trip from Opotiki. Today was that day.

Even better...I've never been to Gisborne before....ever. So I had extra incentive to get my 30kWh LEAF over there and back.

The distance from my starting point to the fast charger in Gladstone St in Gisborne is 142.4km. Along the way you climb from sea level to almost 700 metres. But you do get to go back down to sea level on each leg, so there should be lots of regen.

Greenrace reckons my car - with my body weight and some light luggage added, taking it to 1650kg - should be able to do it at 90kph and arrive on 19%. But that's not allowing for wind and there is always wind...and it doesn't allow for lower ambient temperatures which can reduce your range a bit. This morning it was cool and my battery was 18C instead of the optimal 27C.

So I reckoned if I tried to aim for 80kph (give or take as required) I should be able to get there on about 20%. Would other traffic mess up my plans? :-)

As it happened......no. I left Opotiki just after 07:30, and after the first 15km I didn't see another car going in my direction until 25km short of Gisborne. Literally 100km of empty road. So I did whatever speed I felt looked right....and arrived at the charger in Gisborne on......19%. My average speed for most of it would have been around 80kph. It's an extremely winding road in parts, so there are several stretches where you can do barely more than 60kph. Plus road works....and potholes with their own special low speed zone. Cheaper than fixing them, I guess.

The fast charger in Gisborne is an ABB unit....and they allow you to charge to 100%. So I did. It's free to use for now. I parked the car and went for lunch and some sight-seeing for a couple of hours.

I headed back about 13:30.....thinking this would be an off-peak departure time for Opotiki that would give me more freedom to drive as I wanted. I was sort of right. The car ahead of me did 70kph for the first 20km......and I would have done 80....but I wasn't going to pass this up. :-)

I got to Matawai on 53%. - Matawai is the half way point....and in the crutch between the two high points on that elevation diagram. I had arrived there on 56% going the other way. Matawai is due to get a fast charger in the next few months. The summit of the road is about 7km toward Opitiki after Matawai. I stopped for a photo. :-)

From there it was a roller coaster ride down the hill and I arrived in Opotiki on........19%. Traffic on the return leg was a bit busier, but no issues. If someone comes up behind me fast, I generally get out of the way before they even reach me if I don't want to speed up. Going slower, I actually get to see stuff. :-)

I was pretty happy both directions had used exactly the same amount of energy......despite any variability in my driving style. The Opotiki side is winding and gets steep toward the end. The Gisborne side is much straighter and I had wondered if I would be lead-footed and maybe use too much power. I didn't. Maybe I over compensated.....and got it right by accident. :-)

I could go a little faster knowing that.....but 19% isn't a huge margin.....so not too much faster. :-)

When Matawai gets its fast charger, there won't be any need for caution around energy....and it will be awesome.

I'd like to visit and get our instrument cluster set to English, but I'm in Wellington, and we don't actually get our Leaf until this Thursday. I'll have to work up to such long trips. So maybe another time. :)

What LEAF are you getting, @lowlyworm ?

We are buying a 24 kWh 2014 S.

We started off looking at 30 kWh, but then decided that it couldn't be the sole solution to our car needs.
We have a 16 year old with his learners, and a 15 year old. So we figure we need to become a 2 car family. We will keep our ICE as a second and long distance car. Then in 2-3 years we'll get a second but longer range EV (when they are more available and cheaper) and ditch the ICE.

I plan to use the Leaf as much as I can, even when it would be easier with the ICE. Because that's what it's all about.

We got a Leaf with 10 airbags. That was difficult to find, but important to us.

Thanks for the offer. At the moment (before receipt of car) I'm a little apprehensive about the idea of doing that myself.

But maybe I'll get braver.

We bought our 24kWh Leaf from Nelson and need to drive it to Picton and put it on the ferry to Wellington. Does anyone have any advice on the route?

107km via Linkwater, but hilly and windy.

134km going the route close to Blenheim.

The car company are supplying the car with a 10 amp (not 8 amp!) EVSE. Is that questionable?

At Rai Valley and Pelorus Bridge there are blue commando slow charge facilities. We have a ~5m caravan extension lead that ends with a 10 amp 3-pin (we use it at campsites when we are tenting to power random devices). Can that be connected to the blue commando socket and then to the 3 pin EVSE to supply to the car? I know that will be slowwwwww, but we have time.

Such noob questions....

It is even faster and done in reverse order. Easier than replacing hard drive in laptop (Geektalk :-) with only 2 screws vs 6 in laptop. Taking cluster out and back in - 10 minutes job.

In Auckland I am doing it now without cluster removal.
