This is not correct. I drive through there a number of times each working day. Unless something specific is happening the queue is only there at peak times.

KiwiNZ: Also one of my sons was in the Military Police and was based in Waiouru for a time, he attended quite a few horrific accidents, when he managed to talk about them made one sick to the stomach. He still has bad dreams about them.

Sounds like he needs counselling. Also sounds like he was in the wrong job. Is he still an MP?

I have gone through mid afternoon the last 3 Saturdays and 5 times mid morning this week and the queue at the Terrace tunnel was there and that is just recent examples.

They drive every bit as aggressively as youngster here, but the Third Party Insurance requirement makes it all but impossible for them to drive the Subaru Impreza type cars we see them in here. I mentioned in the Camera Van thread a few days ago, that Jeremy Clarckson was once quoted £25,000 third party only for his Escort Cosworth.

Vauxhall sold a lot of cars to young drivers, by offering a year's free insurance with Corsa sized new vehicles.

I don't know why, but you don't tend to see hoons doing donuts over there either, and they don't have the same 'Loss of Traction' laws in the UK. People certainly drive a lot faster there, but rarely tailgate you. Heck, even the trucks do that here. I couldn't believe how fast and close they went through that twisty bit of SW1 near Kaikoura when I first came to NZ.

If you know the bridge coming into Blenheim southbound from Picton, you will be amazed when I tell you an articulated truck and trailer once actually overtook me on that bridge when I was driving at the limit.

also perhaps not so many cars on the B roads? (same as our A roads)
their motorway is the same as the Auckland motorways, but really, our state highway 1 is equivalent to their B roads, and maybe not many cars use them

That is why we need to drive better, leave the aggression for the sports field, slow down and take driving seriously. Too many think our roads are a play ground.

We also need to reduce the speed limit on many roads, for example the Rimutaka Hill road has a posted limit of 100 kmh to do that would be extreme stupidity but many drivers try.

In your example of the the Rimutaka Hill road, what would you, in your opinion, set the speed limit too? And from where to where (where would your limit start and end if driving Wellington to Wairarapa)?

60kmh starting from the start both sides to the end both sides. Same as the speed limit through Greys Road Puatahanui.

I agree. And I would install SPECS cameras on that road too.

They measure your speed between two points far apart and send you a ticket automatically if you travel between them too fast!

Called *555 last night on way home from xmas at in-laws' place. Young fellow driving all over the road - driving on the footpath then over centre-line with oncoming traffic. The only good thing about it was that he was driving slowly < 50km/h. Talking to police ops as we followed him for about 3km keeping our distance. Inevitably he lost control going around a corner, hit a steel barrier, bounced off that and headed straight across the road in to a steel fence - taking out a roadside power connection cabinet in a shower of sparks, this leaving a tangle of exposed live wires beside the driver's door. I carefully kicked some of these clear so they didn't make contact with the car. By the time I'd got there, he'd worked out that the car was still able to be started, and I couldn't get the keys out of the lock, I shut off the engine, he'd start it, then repeat. He was completely incoherent - but apparently keen to get back on the road ASAP. I couldn't drag the idiot out the driver's door, as he'd have got tangled in the live wires and fried - probably taking me with him. Fortunately police turned up, they couldn't get anycooperation out of him , so had little choice but to drag him out on the passenger's side, being gentle about it wasn't going to happen. I expect he'll be a little bruised this morning.

No youtube video, I was using the phone talking to police. Wife was driving - her mobile somewhere in "the handbag". If we'd have had a dashcam it would have been interesting footage.
This moron wouldn't have been able to walk unaided. I doubt he had been drinking alone. Unless that was the case, then so much for the concept of looking after your mates. As a parent and fully aware that young folks do dumb things at times, it would be some comfort to think that they might look after each other. I'd hate to be a cop - dealing with drunken morons - driving or not - on a regular basis.

Drove Wellington - Napier - Wellington just after New Year. Surprisingly empty roads and we did a great time (on SH2 via the Wairarapa).

Here are a couple of bad things I noticed:

Car pulling a caravan, correctly keeps left on passing lane. Driver who obviously doesn't realise the capacities of her Nissa Tiida decided it was her time to pass - all good except she couldn't get past 90km/h going uphill, so the passing lane came to an end, she didn't pass and didn't let anyone else pass.
Car pulling a caravan, correctly keeps left on passing lane but decided it was the best time to accelerate (as usual). No one passed them on passing lane, but at the end of the passing lane, the idiot moved to the left and drove on the shoulder for about 1km to let everyone pass. Why didn't he let people pass in the passing lane where it was safer for everyone?
Why people drive at 80km/h on a 100km/h open road, when they see the sign for 70km/h they drop to 50km/h and when they see the 50km/sign they drop to 30km/h?
Why do some people put foot in the brakes when they are driving on a 100km/h open road? Can't they keep the speed without doing it? Not an one off thing, this one guy in front of me was doing every few seconds.
People who put foot in brakes, slow down and then indicate the turn - don't they learn do do it the other way around?

What a bunch of idiots.

I made a decision a few years back to not let this stuff stress me an make the trip unenjoyable. I relax and enjoy my trip as the trip is integral to the holiday and I am not going to let a stranger affect my holiday.

I drove 1614 kms over xmas and new year holidays. Firstly to Coromandel and back to Auckland, secondly Auckland to Northland and back.

Have not seen any police, but only 1 speed camera. Generally, I noticed that drivers are more accurate/polite this holidays, but year there was one idiot in mini-bus wanted to pass everybody just before Paihia (windy road with yellow line), he did in the end, but everyone who he passed, almost stopped to let moron go first before last hill where 50km/h zone begins (what's the point???)

and yeah that zero-tolerance just slowed traffic in general, most people, including myself, opt-in to travel at 90-95km/h max. even on well straight open road, just in case there's a speed camera van behind the tree... also it was a pain to go downhill on straight road, when usually you'd let gravity to slow car down after a small hill - no everybody is breaking on the hill and if there're more than 2 cars, somebody has to break going uphill :(

That's incredible! The big trucks usually stop at either end and wait till it is clear, then cross in the middle of the road. A can and truck can pass, but not by much, and two large trucks certainly wouldn't fit side by side. But to actually overtake you while you were doing 50kph, is extraordinary.

I'm reading this at work at the moment (Marlborough Citizens Advice) and my work buddy has just told me he fitted a forward facing camera last week for exactly this sort of bad driving. Not entirely convinced about this, as it would record your own driving habits, but definitely thinking about it. I probably get at least a couple of incidents a year worth putting on YT. Anyone use a dash cam and can recommend?

The people doing 80km/h in a 100km/h area, where it is safe to do 100km/h are the worst. By all means target speeding, but the Police should also look at ticketing those travelling slowly at 70-80 km/h in a 100km/h zone. Why are they doing 70-80? Drunk? Still drunk from the night before? High?

People\drivers get frustrated when other drivers are doing 70-80 km/h in a 100km/h zone. A frustrated driver may make a rash decision, and wipe out a car load going the other way.

And while KiwiNZ may be happy to go with the flow, travelling at 80km/h in a 100KM/h zone is going to add a decent chunk of time on a longer trip.

Lets take the Wellington to Napier idea. Google maps says its 315Km and would take 3 Hours 47 without traffic.

If you could do 100Km/h all the way (which of course, you can't towns\twisty bits etc) it would only be 3 hours 9 minutes to cover 315km.

So we'll assume you can add another 40 minutes for towns and twisty bits where you're not doing 100km/h.

If you're only doing 80km/h, to cover 315km will take you 3 hours 56 minutes (if you could do 80km/h for the whole 315km). So adding another 40 minutes (for towns and twisty bits) would mean the Wellington to Napier trip would take 4 hours 36 minutes

I drove Picton -> Dunedin -> Wanaka -> Picton and have come to loath campervans. Some pulled left when it was safe but the majority would just sit in the middle of the road and not really help people pass even after a fair few cars had started trailing behind them. I'm also wary of rental cars.

Around Central otago some of the tourists I saw driving around was terrifying.

At one point we signaled a cop and told them of an erratic driver who would hit the brakes each time a car came towards them in the opposite lane, couldn't drive around corners without crossing either the inside or outside line and was going odd speeds on straight roads. Would have *555 them but there wasn't any reception. The cops reaction? He initially laughed and said unless they were doing something really dangerous he couldn't do anything. If they are under the speed limit that's not his problem. I got the impression from him sh*ty drivers were par for the course around where we were. Kinda sad really.

Saw another couple of rental cars who had drivers that just couldn't control their vehicles and would constantly cross the center line going around bind twisty corners south of Blenheim. Suffice to say I kept my distance.
