keewee01:
Oblivian: Thought felt head placement.

All it is.

I have one on the bars, 1 on the helmet.  Of course not flashing, and fairly focused beams. The helmet mount is fairly close aimed for forrest trees on corners avoidance. The bar even lower.

Car comes toward, you look with your eyes not your head/neck. (in some cases I even look left and use my peripheral to keep an eye forward). If I'm passed dangerously.. they get a few quick head nods in the back window to remind them to be alert to surroundings.

As a car passes, Head down, eyes up until car is out of beam range. As I'm approaching occupied T's head points spot infront of me and toward their bonnet. Eyes on the scan.

Ta-da. Everyone is friends.

It is fabulous that you are thinking about the others around you and I tip my hat to you (or I would if I wore one)

Been bitten by the ones sending me into fits with the bright flashers lol :P figure its one of those things you live in hope that theres at least 1 other out there thinking from both sides too

Driving home late one evening, in the pitch black. Rounded a corner and was accosted by at least 5 bikers with helmet-mounted flashing LEDS  - was a real dazzling display, so much so I had to suddenly stop. I was blinded for about 2 minutes with dancing spots in front of my eyes - my night vision was completely destroyed.
They certainly were not pointed downwards in any way - full in yer face flashing.

Unlike a car headlights which can be seen coming around a nearby corner, there is no forewarning with helmet lights - they don't put out that much overall brightness to forewarn approaching drivers around corners ...

I always mount my headlight on my bars and pointed down so the spot part of the light is about 5m in front of me thereby giving me enough time to react to obstacles while not dazzling oncoming cars.

It would be nice if cars didn't switch back to high-beam when they realise it's not a car coming toward them, though.

D1023319: Really interesting discussion.

Re registration debate, if cycling is a mainstream transport mode, why shouldnt they be registered and pay road user charges and acc levys? especially electric bikes that go same speed as scooters.

I do, for a car that I don't use very often these days as I chose my bike and I reckon  the same applies to many cyclists. The same argument is used in the UK and in parts of Europe.  However the road user tax is actually an emission based charge which would mean that bikes are pretty much zero rated.
