The model 3 is considered a luxury vehicle, so the Model Y would also, because it is essentially an SUV version of the model 3. I mean it has automatic everything. Whereas a basic everyday EV lacks many of the features of the Model 3 and Y. They could make these cars a lot cheaper if they removed a lot of the luxury features.

Which features do you think Tesla should remove to make their cars cheaper?

There are potentially a lot.

Leather seats, heated seats (including the rear one which have heated seats built in, but you have to pay an extra amount to enable them). What is wrong with cloth seats and manual adjustments?

Automatic powered steering wheel adjustment. Automatic glovebox. Automatic powered opening boot. Removing some of the other technology like summon, may reduce costs.

Removing some of the automated features  may also reduce the cost, like lane departure warnings etc, self driving, and are often addons that people have to pay for with other car brands. But that probably isn't the best idea, as cheaper cars should also get all those safety features without paying extra. I see Toyota include a lot of these safety features as standard now, rather than them being an upsell.

If we want mass take-up, take a budget brand new shopping trolley, then a base mid size car, do nothing except replace the expensive ICE, the expensive transmission, add a low cost 20 part electric engine, and batteries.

It seems our Prime Minister thinks she knows more about Toyota's future EV products than Toyota does.

https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/politics/2021/06/prime-minister-jacinda-ardern-considered-exemption-for-utes-in-electric-car-incentive-scheme-but-ruled-it-out.html

Toyota New Zealand expressed disappointment on Monday after Ardern told The AM Show the company was looking to deliver EV utes within 12 to 24 months.

"We're hoping within the next 12 to 24 months the likes of Toyota are talking about EV utes," Ardern told The AM Show.

"My hope is then that people might delay their purchase in order to start building a market in New Zealand where you can access those vehicles, because it is a problem."

Toyota NZ chief executive Neeraj Lala said the company had no plans for an electric Hilux ute within the next 24 months.

"It is irresponsible to suggest that customers stop buying non-electric vehicles immediately until there is an electric option available," Lala said.

"The range and volumes of EV's needed to meet demand is simply not available, and many customers still need a vehicle to transport their family or operate their business."

Motor Industry Association chief executive David Crawford also questioned Ardern's comments.

The quote is "the likes of Toyota" not "Toyota".

The "likes of Toyota" most likely will have an EV ute in the next 12-24 months. I would he very surprised if Ford doesn't have an EV Ranger rolling around by then making use of their developments in the F150 Lightning and Ranger sized Maverick

Nope she definitely was talking about Toyota. Have a read of that article. It goes on to say;

Ardern is standing by her remarks.

"Toyota, of course, have indicated their hope that within a time period - my recollection is by the end of next year - they're hoping for hybrids," she said on Wednesday.

Since you seem to be keen to pick the fly poo out of the pepper, the Maverick is not the same size as the Ranger. It is smaller and uses monocoque construction rather than a ladder chassis.

I hope they do produce a Ranger with the option of hybrid, PHEV, and EV power trains. The Maverick is probably too small for trade use, so Ford would need to see a market for them to the ‘urban cowboys’.

Be surprised no longer! Ford does have a new Ranger coming out in the next 12-24 months - it is based on the new T6 platform (same as the new Bronco, and co-developed with VW, which’ll have the new Amarok).

Sadly though, the best you can hope for for Ranger in the next 4 years, 2027+, is a petrol hybrid.

Motor Industry Association chief executive David Crawford also questioned Ardern's comments.

And yet, a couple of months ago there  was a lot of talk about it:

It's happening: Toyota is serious about building an electric ute - News - Driven

"Toyota New Zealand CEO Neeraj Lala revealed that a hybrid Hilux was expected to be part of the move that sees every Toyota model get some form of electrification. “We expect this trend to continue and even expand into commercials. We hope to have Hilux hybrid enter the market before the end of next year,” Lala said."

And also Toyota confirms it’s working on an electric ute (autocar.co.nz)

"There was a lot to pick apart with those statements; both those issued by Toyota New Zealand CEO Neeraj Lala and those uttered to the press in Shanghai. But one of the nuggets that seemingly went under the radar was a comment on plans for a selection of ‘greener’ utes. In its statement where it said that some 15 electric cars would be coming down the pipe, Toyota added that it is also going to “bring electrification to the pickup truck lineup in the near future, including hybrid and BEV powertrains.”"

While the timeline maybe wrong, never say never.

she confused EV with hybrids. not sure if genuine confusion or lack of understanding between the two

This makes more sense. As per my previous reply as well - which I posted then saw the "hybrid".

Well I'll keep up the trend then. The drive train usually refers to what makes the car go and doesn't include the chassis. While the chassis between the three are different, the drive train components don't have to be.
