You're in Dunedin right? I'm not sure what the motorway situation is like in Dunedin.. <snip>.

Yep; thinking about it - most of my commute from Mosgiel to Dunedin is actually done via State Highway 1 so I guess autopilot would actually be pretty useful.

But FSD, still not worth it.

but is it really FULL SELF DRIVE?

self drive means self drive - not sure why you need full in front of it

but i thought you have to put your hands on it and look at the road - if that's the case it's neither self drive nor full self drive?

more like - attempting self drive ASD

They've named it what they aspire for it to eventually be. Right now, the features that allow the hands off aspect are still "coming soon"

No. All cars get Autopilot (TACC + Autosteer/Lane keeping)

As said, no.

Every tesla has (basic) cruise control + Autopilot (steering, adaptive speed etc).

FSD is of limited use in NZ for now

Any idea on location? Johnsonville would make sense as they've put the superchargers in there.

I have to be honest this is really starting to draw me in.

I've looked at an EV before but always been put off with the lack of range given I've only been looking at older Leaf's. It doesn't help I can't stand the look of them, but I'm wondering if I've been looking at it the wrong way around.

Instead of looking for cheap car now, invest for five years and know I'll come out better in the long run.

With our house having gone up the way it has and the range of an SR+ meaning we could do our usual trips to Wellington, Palmerston or Napier with no problems (and the fact it would be a brand new car) it's all very tempting.

My wife could effectively do all the driving she ever does and only charge at home. Anything further afield and we'd take my M5 anyway :)

But a showroom in Wellington could be what tips us over the edge.

I don't suppose anyone has done a spreadsheet showing the cost of ownership over 5 years for a given km have they :)

I've seen spreadsheets on costs in the nz ev owners facebook group but not looked at them.

Theres basically no servicing, tires are not cheap but the 18s are not super expensive. Insurance can be up there but its a quick new car and I've had amp quotes under $1k for a SR+

Find out what your electricity cost is per kwh (or look at a new cheaper provider) and what annual mileage you'd do. I get 7kms per kwh but thats on a slightly thirstier performance.

Other than that theres pretty much no costs.

Wellington already has a service technician available, so this will be in addition to that.

Costs depends on how much you drive. In 18 months of driving my Model 3 I've done around 35000km. With an average efficiency of 166Wh/km (the SR+ will have a better efficiency) and a off peak power rate of 9c/kWh, my cost to charge at home for that distance is $523. However, there is some public charging from a few road trips to add ontop of that (usually around $26 for a low charge level to 80-90%), but it would still be well under $1000 for that.

Depending on how much you drive there is also at least one set of tyres to factor in. Depending on if you go with the OEM tyres that have the sound dampning foam inside you're looking at around $450-$500 per tyre. I'm still on the originals but I'm not far off needing a new set.

Interesting development,

I'm guessing there would be some sort of premium exacted by Tesla for other manufacturers to be allowed access

"Tesla CEO Elon Musk said Tuesday that the company’s network of DC fast-charging stations for its electric vehicles, also known as the Tesla Supercharger network, will be open to other types of electric vehicles in 2021."

"Musk did not say where in the world Tesla would make its DC fast-charging stations available for use with other electric vehicles, or which makes and models would be compatible with Tesla’s on-the-road chargers in 2021.

He did say that Tesla intends to make Superchargers open to other electric vehicles in all countries, eventually."
