HarmLessSolutions:

The whole RUCs on EVs thing was discussed to death over 70 pages of this thread

Seems a bit pointless to regurgitate the same stuff all over again.

I agree. If anyone wants to continue the conversation about RUC, please do it on the old thread linked by HarmLessSolutions.

And by please I mean I will remove further discussions on RUC from this thread.

I personally think it comes down to most new car buyers not understanding EVs well enough, and getting caught up on negative stories they've heard about EVs, that they don't want to take the chance so they stick with what they know.

EVs aren't for everyone. I think that buyers interested in EVs have probably now bought and the market has pretty much tapped out. I fully understand EVs but prefer to remain with ICE at this point in time. I suspect many other new car buyers are the same.

For people who can't charge at home a hybrid works out cheaper, even if you take into account the proposed shift to fleet-wide RUC.

At this point we have heard you loud and clear, EVs are not for you. No need to keep repeating it.

That said, feel free to add to the conversation and be negative, but please make it more than just opinions.

New Zealand is currently in the 'Early adopter' phase of EV technology adoption. Regulatory changes implemented by the current government has slowed the uptake of EVs but in the bigger picture this is only a minor hiccup and EV adoption will only increase at pace as influencing factors inevitably move in favour of EVs, particularly in economic terms.

The factors that will come into play in this regard include:

  • Cheaper fuel price compared to fossil fuels
  • Increasing up take of 'rooftop' solar presenting a strong synergy with EV ownership
  • Introduction of V2H/V2G technology and regulations
  • Levelling of road use taxation across vehicle energy types
  • Reducing cost of battery storage systems, including impacts on EV prices
  • Improvements on public charging facilities, including easier payment methods
  • Normalisation of EV ownership as it becomes more widespread
  • Improved 'end of life' disposal of EVs
  • Reducing acceptance of fossil fuel use
  • International directives to counter worsening climatic effects
  • Central & local government restrictions on vehicle ownership, urban access, and town planning directives

Not an exhaustive list but enough to direct all but the most skeptical away from ICE ownership with the most powerful incentive being economics of EVs.

On the tech adoption curve, "The Chasm" is often depicted between the Eairly Market and Mainstream market.

We in NZ have yet to cross the Chasm. It is a challenging stage in adoption. The innovators & Early adaptors have largely already had their fill, but tech is not quite appealing to Pragmatists / Eairly majority yet.

My next car will be an EV. I just have other non-vehicle priorities at the moment.

Are we really discouraged from expressing opinions here and everything has to be documented fact? Seems to defeat the point of a discussion forum and would make this place a bit sterile.

I expect my next one will be an EV or possibly one of the new style PHEVs with no mechanical drive from the ICE part.

The reasons for this are mainly affinity for technology, convenience of refueling at home, low cost of refueling at home and reduced maintenance. Not really for carbon reasons.

One big factor is the secondhand market. The main issue most of it is still first generation-ish battery systems 10yo Leaf for example. It's a great thing if you're a low-ish kms driver half the time and there are two cars in the family. Otherwise, you have a lot less choice.

It's a big jump in s/h market price and later model to something with 500+kms

It will take a while to cross that gap. There are some choices appearing in between .

I think you would get a little fed up if I started commenting on any ICE car and/or petrol thread that I didn't think ICE are a great idea. And not only once, but over and over again.

It really doesn't add to the conversation at all.

This video by Rory Sutherland addresses most advantages of EVs over ICEVs in a novel and clever way.

I also thought my next car would be a PHEV, I already had a hybrid which my kids are now using. The trouble was going to be the electric range, I don't use my car everyday but when I do use it I drive close to 100 km, so I needed a PHEV with a big battery...as it turns out, that would cost more than many BEVs.

When I saw my local dealer selling the ID.5 for just over 50k and it was basically undriven, just pre-registered 7 months ago, I had to take it for a test drive. I liked the smooth ride and the feeling it was made for long range comfortable cruising, that I made up my mind right then that I would buy it.
