The Hyundai Kona could be good. It will come with two battery sizes. The largest is 64kWh, I think.....

Not sure when we will see it here.

We will see many of these cars a LOT sooner if the government says fossil fuel cars can't be sold after 2030.

It's comparable with the F Pace's sticker price in NZ - the point being it's a proper EV made by an established auto manufacturer, probably to more exacting standards than the Teslas (although that will improve with time), at a price comparable with the petrol versions.

I have a friend that have ordered the I-Pace, its expected sometime during 2018 in Norway. Wouldn't surprise me if you don't see it being sold in NZ until around 2019.

Have looked at the specs, and the Tesla seems to have more in terms of "smarts", but it is a nice looking car that you can get with a decent size battery. Think I still would have chosen the Tesla Model X over the I-Pace, but I have only driven the X, so will let you know what I think when I have had the opportunity to test drive the I-Pace.

There is likely to be little in that space until an electric Swift or something similar comes along; now if that was an option I'd be giving it some serious thought.

Isn't the Leaf the equivalent to an "EV Swift", really?

Given what I've seen about Tesla delivery quality and build issues (and the fact I liked the F Pace shape to begin with) I'd have gone for the I Pace; but Tesla's build quality will get better so that will become a tougher choice over time.

The Leafs are quite a bit bulkier than a Swift; mostly in the overhang over the front but the Leaf is also a bit fatter in the hips as well. I can't imagine the handling is anywhere near the same level either. I'd be happier with something Swift-sized with Swift Sport level trim and a range of 350km.

I’d not have thought so, really. Swift is quite a bit more compact than the Leaf (eg, we replaced a Jazz with a Leaf, and the Leaf is about 30cm longer than the Jazz; the Jazz was substantially more roomy than a Swift when we purchased that).

Edit: (latest models):
Swift 3840 long, 1735 wide, 1495 high
Leaf 4480 long, 1790 wide, 1540 high

Further, the Swift has got a reputation as a good handler, and a bit of a “driver’s car’. I don’t think I’d ever say that about the Leaf! It’s ok in town but on the open road I miss my own Mazda. While the new model Leaf is supposed to be more engaging to drive, I don’t think it’ll be up there... others report cars like the e-Golf are better handling.

Will be interesting to see what ipace build quality is like. Tesla x has some issues.

Any news on Ioniq EV wrecks in New Zealand? I want dash (aka Speedometer) to play with miles to kms conversion on that one.

I have tools but not keen to experiment with the dash in the almost new UK imported one.

All recent developments I have tested on the bench with the dashes purchased from wrecks.

Please PM me if you hear about Ioniq EV or Ioniq Hybrid wreck.

...and roomier on the inside because they haven't wasted space on a petrol engine. The LEAF engine is very compact...and doesn't require all the supporting components (no oil or air filters, distributor, alternator, gearbox, various belts don't exist...and so on).

It can be as big as it likes on the inside, it's the total size that is going to give me grief with parking in places like Parnell.

Having said that, Hybrid 2017 Swifts are popping up on Goo; supposedly 27km per litre and a 37 litre tank so a theoretical 1,000km range; that might tide me over until a full BEV Supermini comes along.

A friend of mine in CA has just replaced his i3 with a Chevy Bolt. He was thinking of a used Tesla S but apparently the insurance on Tesla's is a killer.

He loves the Bolt. Much better range than the i3, no suicide doors and nicer styling. It does take a bit longer to fully charge even though he has the i3 charger setup in his garage because the battery is larger. It is as peppy as the i3 and has many more cool tech features.

Love to be able to buy one here but there is no RHD version around yet. But I recall reading somewhere there was a lobby or request to allow LHD EV's to be imported so we could have a ready market here. For some strange reason you can import a LHD performance car from the US (like a Corvette, Charger etc.) because there is an exception for performance cars but you can't import a standard LHD drive unless presumably it's classed as a classic card.

There are specific criteria to meet - LHD vehicles pose an additional safety risk and the rational for exempting performance/classics is because in theory people won't do as many miles in them.

In fact one of the pre-reqs for getting an SIV exemption is that you have another vehicle to use as a regular car.

To issue a vehicle with a category A LHD vehicle permit, the Transport Agency must either deem it to have historic value, or it must be a vehicle that was not manufactured in right-hand drive form that meets three of the following four requirements:

the vehicle (or its make, model and submodel) is identified as being a collector's item in a commercially produced motoring publication
the vehicle's make, model and submodel has been (or was) manufactured in annual volumes of 20,000 units or less
the vehicle is, and was manufactured as, a two-door coupe or a convertible
the vehicle is, and was manufactured as, a high-performance vehicle.

The Transport Agency may issue up to 500 category A LHD vehicle permits per year

You could have squeaked in last year with a bolt as "under 20,000 units annual volume", but the bolt blew past 20K units annually in November 2017, so that avenue is now closed...

It does look beautiful, but unfortunate that so many manufacturers have learned from Teslas trick of 'sell it years before delivery' :(
