Got a mail from Suzuki about their eVitara launch offer. Base model is $55K+ORC. So, $60K, for a Vitara EV. What am I missing here?
The first thing I would be doing is asking them to justify $5000 ORCs?
Bloody hell, does it include 50,000km of RUC or something?

$5k does seem a lot, guess it depends on how many RUCs it comes with, but ORC usually covers wof, 1st year rego, maybe mats, full groom, software updates, pre-delivery inspection.
We sell high end European brand where the pre-delivery / software can be upwards of 20 tech hours per vehicle, our ORCs for that brand aren't as high..... (but then the price isn't as low either so apples/oranges)

Short warranty, too, for a modern EV. 3 years/100,000km.

Charging speed also about four years behind the curve.

It kinda depends - if it can pull 65kW between 20% to 80% i.e. has a flat charging curve, then that's OK. It'll be interesting to see what real world reviews show. I've seen some Tesla charging curves that taper off very steeply 10 mins after charging starts, even though they have a 200kW capable charger.

Did you guys hear about the new charging network coming to NZ & Aus? BYD flash charging is supposedly coming this year.

Plenty of new EV tech on show at the 2026 Beijing motor, including new tech batteries with 1,000 - 1,500km range. Limited range in current BEV is the core reason for me not considering an electric vehicle, so pretty much opening the door to me (and many others) to a future EV purchase.
And for those who say Chinese car makers will not be the death of legacy car makers, just have a look at what is on offer ...
There are already joint ventures between legacy car makers and Chinese EV companies, including but not limited to Ford/Renault-BYD, Stellantis-Leapmotor, Volvo-Geely, and VW-Xpeng.

We picked up our Sealion 7 on Friday- perhaps this was already mentioned idk - we got 10% of with our farmlands card/account.
There is a really good video comparing Tesla and Xpeng autopilot in REALLY chaotic traffic in a large chinese city.
It's a bit over an hour long and I ended up watching it all.
Xpeng has really done a great job on catching up (and in some cases exceeding Tesla).
How either car more than coped in the real life traffic - I really don't know. The tech is just that good now.

The physics of Li-ion and Na-ion batteries (from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i31x5JW361k)

So Sodium batteries will have their uses but not for longer range vehicles. Maybe better charging infrastructure will mitigate that (not holding my breath this side of 2030 though).

It seems unfair that the manufacturer would ship a vehicle with outdated software and then expect the customer to pay for the upgrade.
