It's easy to use the Japanese head unit if you have half a clue. Google Translate on a smart phone can do real-time transaltion of the display on the phone screen....makes sense of most of it. Beyond that there are YouTube videos and printed manuals with translations.

Yeah that is why I asked the question. It doesn't make much sense seeing as the japanese headunit is still quite usable. It is a bit of an annoyance but it seems rather drastic to loose all the other functionality.

In other news, the van version of the Nissan Leaf is being released in the EU with a 40kWh battery. It takes up exactly the same space as the 24kWh battery currently fitted.

The extra 16kWh should increase the range by 100km over the current 120-140km....to a real-world 220-240km on a single charge. Combined with CHAdeMO fast charging, this van should be able to recharge quickly to 80% at "lunch time" in under 30 minutes, if needed. They are available as empty cargo vans or with 5 and 7 seats fitted. As such, this makes the 40kWh e-NV200 a reasonably good "people mover".

They aren't luxurious.....but they get the job done. You can see the 24kWh version at GVI in Penrose, Auckland. They have at least a dozen of them visible from the road.

2012 would all Gen 1.....mostly irrelevant for the later Gen 2 and 30kWh Leafs.

My own Leaf is now probably close to two years since manufacture. It now has a hair under 41,000km on it. That's 25,000 miles. My own battery capacity is declined to about 95-97%. The last time I saw 100% was August 1st.

I'd say 95% for a 2016 Leaf was about right. The more you drive them, they longer they seem to keep the full capacity. I've seen my battery drop three times....and each time it was after going to Australia for a week or two and the car wasn't driven. After returning, I drive it for a few days and the battery seems to recover.

I suspect it is LeafSpy and the stats recovering.......the battery is probably just the battery.

People havwe told me....and I think I'm starting to see it for myself....that you can't look at battery stats as being exact. They will be precise up to a point.....and I'd say that 'point' is a fudge factor about 5% wide. (as in + or - 2.5% each way...but you aren't sure where the middle is).

Hopefully they have improved the crash safety rating. As the current version has only a 3 star crash safety rating - terrible for a year 2014 vehicle which was a new design at the time. I was actually contacted by GVI asking me if I was interested in buying one of the E-NVs. I was seriously considering it until I found out about the crash safety rating.

In comparison the 2009 Mercedes Vito has a 5 star ANCAP rating. And the 1999 - 2004 (early shape) has a 5 star used car crash safety rating. Since I have a 2002 Vito - No way was I going to buy a new van with a worse crash safety rating than my current one - despite being 12 years newer.

It just seems to be penny pinching by Nissan. As surely it would be easier to build a safe electric car than a safe ICE car. As no need to account for a big heavy lump of metal in the front of the car which won't crumple.

True. It is a very light vehicle, particularly for anything behind the front two seats. I've seen the 7-seater and the back seats are definitely there....but they look 'light'.

Though, all things considered, I haven't had in injury crash in 40 years of driving......and I've driven cars that would been long short of a 3. :-)
I note the crash rating, but it's not the make / break element.

I'm boringly careful....and when I see someone else driving badly I often take the option of pulling over and letting them fulfill their potential on someone else's fender down the road. It''s the ones you don't see that make you want a 5 star.

Anyone had to get a new key for their leaf? I am looking at one with only 1 key. Which would be a bit of a nuisance but workable for a month or two. However getting a new key seems to be quite a process. Has anyone got one off a Nissan dealer in NZ? I found a guy that says he can do it for $199 but he is in Auckland and needs the car to be able to do it. Only guy in the South Island that can do it is in Nelson but that's not going to work when I'm in Otago!

Got spare key via Nissan dealer in Christchurch. About $450. Had to wait about fortnight for key to arrive, then left car at dealership for the morning for programming etc.

Oh wow, I was under the impression only the Japanese dealers could do keys for the Japanese leafs because they were different somehow, but that’s awesome... not cheap but good to know it can be done

Yeah that would be brilliant! But, how does one get it programmed? Can the Nissan dealer program it as no locksmiths in my region are able to.

Gee, that looks like a rabbit hole to look into! You can buy this one from alibaba for ~$200NZD. It wouldn't surprise me that for less than the cost that Nissan NZ charges you could buy a blank key from Ebay and the programmer and do it yourself! It looks like you plug the unit into the OBDII connector and then maybe add the serial number of the new key to the "allowed" list on the car?
