A source at Honda suggested a short to middling range, so 155 miles (250km) is expected."

I could live with 250km range if the battery could be rapid-charged properly.

Surely not. It's a very small car and is competing with ICEs around the $20k mark.

I suspect it’s competing with the egolf, exactly the same as the original civic that competed with the original golf.

Just because it’s small doesn’t mean it’s cheap. It doesn’t cost much more to manufacture a large vehicle, it’s just that we are used to paying more for them. Large vehicles just have larger profit margins and subsidise small car prices, which the car companies must sell to comply with emission standards.

I can see small ice vehicles disappearing first as EV sales pick up.

I would have thought that small ICE will hang around longer as while FF based, they run on an oily rag, comparitively.

Been thinking about renting a VW eGolf for a weekend trip from Christchurch to Queenstown and back. (about a 470km trip) $219 (3-days) with Europcar. I'd easily spend $200 in petrol with my 2006 Subaru Forester (basically a tank each way). Looks like i'd need to charge it twice on the trip down as they have a 220km range. So maybe another $20 each way for power as there are a couple free charging spots along the way.

While the trip if done today is probably still cheaper in my forester, it wont be long before i'm ditching the petrol car in favor for a EV. Plus i get to enjoy the trip in a brand new car and don't have to worry about Rego/WOF/tyres etc etc

Next year will be interesting when the 2019 leafs have a 450km+ range or cost of fuel goes up and i'm spending $120+ on a tank.

That seems counter-intuitive to me.

The smaller cars are where the biggest price premium for EV over ICE will be and where the fuel costs of an ICE are lowest, so the potential savings are lowest.

Is it the battery packs that drive the higher cost of EVs? Electric motors are simple and cheap and everything else of the vehicle is a subset of regular car parts.

Yes batteries are expensive, but still cheaper than petrol. The price premium on an EV is because you don’t pay for petrol up front on an ICE. If you count the cost of petrol EVs can be cheaper. And batteries are cheaper every year.

Small ICE cars are made and sold for regulatory reasons not business reasons. They don’t make much money and some models lose money. As we see more EVs sold small cheap ICE cars will be rare birds. No reason to make them anymore if the car companies aren’t forced too and there is no profit in them.

There will still be small ICE cars just not the cheapest ones.

The inability to import these zero emission LHDs just shows our governments still have not thought through the emissions impact on their regulatory framework.

...or that it's inherrently more dangerous to drive a LHD vehicle in a country where everything is based around RHD vehicles? This regime is in place for a reason.
